There are a number of confederate monuments that commemorate local battles or local civil war participants which are genuinely tied to the place where they are erected. For example, the statue of General Mouton in Lafayette. Mouton and his family laid out and founded the town. He may have been a bigot, but he was a local bigot whose family is responsible for the place. It wouldn't be the same if there was a statue of Gen. Lee in downtown Lafayette, erected in opposition to civil rights. Lee probably never set foot in the place.

All I'm saying is that some of the statues were clearly put up to express white supremacy, Jim Crow, opposition to civil rights. That is the "history" of those monuments. Others are appropriate to a place or an event, and should be viewed differently.

And for those who don't already know, I'm a liberal.

Fair take. What do you think about the removal of the P.G.T. Beauregard statue in New Orleans?

Not any more. Welcome to the dark side. Antifa will pay you a visit shortly and re-educate you on this momentary lapse in judgement. Torches may be involved.

Personally I wanted it to stay because it was a beautiful sculpture. Also I thought that Beauregard's strong ties to New Orleans made it different than Lee. I'm sorry to see it go. Didn't care about Lee in Lee Circle, however.

edit: And Liberty Place had to go.

That's why I asked, because Beauregard is actually from New Orleans unlike Lee and Jefferson Davis.

Lee is more closely tied to New Orleans than is commonly known. As an engineer, he designed and built the jetties that kept the mouth of the Mississippi from silting up.

If I were descendant from the metropolitan police killed that day I would be livid. That memorial named both sides who were killed with names, ranks etc.

What right does someone have to remove a memorial that has the names of police killes that day?

I'm actually a descendant of the guy who led 600 men against the metropolitan police at Liberty Place and was arrested by U.S. Marshals.

I liked the statue just because it's part of my family's history and I know all about the battle because of it.

But I can completely understand why people wanted it removed.

That's a fair compromise.

The one on Ole Miss' campus falls under this category. I really hope the SJWs can accept that it is a historical monument that is a part of the school history.

Having that monument on the same campus as a monument to James Meredith shows how people change and places change over time and we can learn from our past. People keep saying these statues need to be in a museum but I'd argue that college campuses are a different form of museums where the past can be interwoven with the present to teach the current students lessons from previous students experiences.

In context if they are a marker such as :Painting or bust of Lee at spot of surrender in Appomattox, etc.....,But 1500 commemorative sites & 700 Confederate monuments to these traitors is absurd.

This goes beyond history & borders on psychosis. One that Neo Confederates need to confront / deal with.

Beauregard was in full Confederate uniform? Take it down. Having connections to the town doesn't change why it was erected.

"I am very happy to take part in this unveiling of the statue of General Robert E. Lee.

All over the United States we recognize him as a great leader of men, as a great general. But, also, all over the United States I believe that we recognize him as something much more important than that. We recognize Robert E. Lee as one of our greatest American Christians and one of our greatest American gentlemen."

Good take, this is where I'm at as well. Commemorating the dead and battles fought is far different than espousing individuals and white supremacy type stuff.

eg, Battle of Liberty Place monument (bad) vs. Arkansas Memorial at Vicksburg (benign)

This goes beyond psychosis and shows itself as dumbassery.
