They were all Christians. What was the point of the protestants exerting dominance over the Catholics? I never could wrap my head around that...

The Protestant majority enclave that existed in 6 counties did not want to be part of a country that would have been 98% Catholic.

They feared they would be discriminated against and would be powerless regarding influence.

FTR the ones in N. Ireland are from Scotland, brought in to bolster Britain's conquest of Ireland.

I'm of Irish descent, married to a Scots-Irish, no big deal.
But I actually have a letter from 19th century Irish relatives to my ancestors here in the US detailing the seizure of their property by the Brits.

It's not about religion. It's never been about religion. It just happens to cut along that line and it's easier to report it as a Protestant vs Catholic conflict.

In reality it comes down to those who want an united Ireland vs those who chose to be part of and ruled by the UK.

And because of Mr. Cromwell.

Religon is the excuse used to report on the story. There was a faction of the IRA made up of protestants. Ireland should be an independant nation without strings attatched.

It really comes down to ethno-centrism and nationalism more than anything else.

Bloody Mary burned hundreds of Protestants alive.

So quite an improvement by the 1970s.

Also just what Dean Wormer (the same actor) said in The Outlaw Josey Wales: "A man like Wales lives by the feud."

So too the Irish.

Which has nothing to do with Ireland.

No one can deny the treatment of Irish Catholics by Britain and its occupying forces.

Catholics were dispossessed of their homes, were not allowed to be educated(though the Church got around that) were not allowed to vote, or a whole lot of other things.

The Protestants in Ireland are descendant of those brought over from Scotland and England.

This isn't a feud for feud's sake, it's about a nation that was invaded, then forced to accept the artificial boundaries placed on it by the invading force. Though I think both sides have worn themselves out with the fighting, and I do think that one day Ireland will be peacefully re-united.

And Elizabeth's reign of terror makes Mary's look mild by comparison. Read a fricking book.

Because in 1916, the Forces of the Crown, to take the
Orange, White and Green bombarded Dublin Town.

They hanged young Kevin Barry high
Just a lad of eighteen years
Cork City's flames lit up in the sky
But our brave lads new no fear

The Cork brigade with hand-grenades
In ambush wait and lay, and
The black and tans, like lightening ran
From the Rifles of the IRA!
