Nigel Farage will be made a “close but unofficial adviser” to Donald Trump after he enters the White House today, a key ally of the new president has said.

Phil Bryant, the Governor of Mississippi, made the comments at a party thrown for Mr Farage on the top floor of the five star Hay Adams hotel overlooking the White House on Thursday night.

The news will cause consternation in Downing Street which has repeatedly tried to downplay the significance of Mr Farage to Mr Trump, describing him as an "irrelevance".

What is the purpose of an naming someone an unofficial adviser? Isn't anybody that has meaningful advice, that is willing to share it, technically an unofficial adviser?

Technically, yes. But it does say he will be a "close" unofficial adviser, so I take that as pretty stronger than usual.

Fair enough. And I can't deny that he probably has some meaningful advice, but he's been so entrenched in such a fundamentally different set of circumstances in the UK, that I'm wondering what he has to offer besides general political advice from a similar type of politician with vastly more experience.

I think we appreciate this guy more than the Brits do. I say we offer him citizenship and show everyone how much we love our immigrants.

I admittedly don't know much about him except his influence on Brexit. But if a majority of Brits voted for Brexit, yet don't appreciate him as much as that support, then maybe that's a red flag.

Then again, I doubt most people actually know who is here (they can hardly name the VP) so my above comment is probably irrelevant.

I live in Europe and there's been a massive media campaign against him from all angles. It's portrayed as unintelligent and uninformed to support him and that he's a populist and a racist. If he wasn't one of the best public speakers in the modern era he wouldn't have made it past pub lectures.

It takes a level of critical thinking that most people don't possess to get around all the bad press.

This. Like listening to beautiful music - how he stuck it to the EU Establishment in such a direct manner. So many parallels to what lies ahead for Trump.

Trump owes a great deal of gratitude to Farage and Scott Walker for paving the way - having the balls to duke it out with the Untouchables - and winning. Farage has it figured out - hit the mute button and keep chopping wood.
