Chalk up another vote for private schools.

I read this expecting it to be a non-story.

There are a variety of ways sex can be dealt with that are, more or less, appropriate for a middle-school aged student.

Heaviness in the thighs? She felt him cum?

I'm by no means a prude, and by no means against young readers being challenged... additionally, I would have no issue with a teenager reading that sort of book of their own volition.

How the hell could a school assign that? That is wildly inappropriate for a mandated school assignment.

Do you think that the person who assigned it actaully read it beforehand, or do you think they said "hey.. here's a book written by a local author who can come in and personally talk about the book to the class.. we'll read this one" without having a clue as to what the book contained.

I could only speculate, and it would be lazy to do so.

I imagine there are some redeeming qualities to this novel, or else the author wouldn't have been invited in the first place.

Perhaps this is the type of book that should be assigned to high-school seniors - who are we kidding, by 18 they've done worse than read about sex - for its merits.

It's inappropriate for a middle-school student.

The father in question had every right to question what this school was doing. He deserves an apology, IMO.

I can understand wanting to keep a limit on how long people can speak so that no-one can get out of control but arresting someone for going over the limit is just horrible.

I doesn't sound like he was arrested for going over the limit. It sounds like he was arrested for not stopping when they said, sir, you are over the limit.

I've seen idiots like John Barry have to be removed from MetroCouncil meetings for the same reasons.

I pretty much avoided commenting on the content of the book because I think there is an argument for both sides.

Did any other parents have a problem with the book? Or was he the only one?

Just curious at what the town thought of the assignment.

ETA: and honestly, I was reading worse by that time. I would read Crichton in the 6th grade and read Jaws in 6th.

People bitch about kids being juvenile, but then do their best to shelter the kids from adulthood and adult themes.

Guarantee that the girl has read and seen worse in her lifetime. Just didn't want dad to know that.

Hey buddy, I don't know what kind of person you are or people you hung around with when you were 18. When I was 18, we were all perfect little angels... and would never DREAM about reading about sex, much less doing the sex. Just ask our parents!! And my daughter, who is 16, will be the same way when she's 18. Assuming I let her out of her room by then.

It's my understanding that 2 others spoke against the book, and 4 spoke in support of it.

Also , for the record, the Board allowed the entire passage to be read aloud in the meeting, as well as biblical verses saying those in favor of the book are damned. So it's not exactly like they acted against free speech.

So, it's basically like a meeting where Huck Finn is discussed as being able to be read in schools.

This is ridiculous.
