Next Steps after Ferguson?

Just thought a list of potential actions might be nice to try and compile:
Local
-Get more black police officers. No excuses about lack of interest.
-Mayor should resign. Probably didn't even do anything specifically wrong. But unless he is particularly supported by the black community, it would probably help the town move forward. That said, I don't know the election cycle. If he just got elected OR elections are next year, that may not make sense.
Nationally
-Provide funding for more cameras. Everyone seems to agree on that.
-Reduce transfer of military hardware to police. I personally disagree with this one; but I am trying to make a comprehensive list.
-Improve data collection on officer involved shootings. This is an obvious one. More data = more informed debated and better policies. Too much rumor and not enough facts. It should include officer use of force and when police are attacked.
-Stop War on Drugs. Again, for comprehensiveness sake.
What other ideas?

Hopefully, they will burn south Chicago. I would consider that progress.

Burn this hitch to the ground

So fire some of the white officers in Ferguson because they are white?

Charge all the "witnesses" that lied to the grand jury.

New buildings built with fire retardant materials.

hmmm....hows about getting the black community to stop shitting in their own bed? just for starters.....

Pull police force out of neighborhoods that have a problem with the police being there in the first place and let them "work it out"

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. Fire all the white people and just fill them with random black people. That is the essence of my idea.
No, obviously not. But turnover happens. Probably will happen a bit quicker than normal for this department.
Also, probably not a bad idea to go ahead and add a few extra positions anyway. It's not like they won't need them.

Would you do that through city ordinance or congressional action?
That's not really a step. That's a goal. How do we get there is the hard question.

Neither. Why place more gov't on them when they clearly don't understand what the current gov't system provides? Noooooo, you have to do it with education. The elders need to step in and make a stand within the community to change from top down.
And I know there is no panacea....wishful thinking...

How does one go about accomplishing this goal?
If you don't have enough black applicants that meet the qualifications, how do you get more black police officers? Do you lower the standards?

Was told there was none.

What does a coach do if he can't get enough offensive linemen? Does he lower his standards? Not and keep his job for long. He recruits. I think if they made a concerted effort they could get some additional black candidates. A few extra recruits, every year, starts to add up. No, not an instantaneous fix, but better later than never.

quote:Why is this necessary? The implication is that white officers are unable to do the job because of the color of their skin. That's an entirely bigoted position.
-Get more black police officers.

This is really the issue.
Although I agree with much that is proposed in the OP as far as increasing police accountability and supervision, the people who have instigated this whole thing have no end goal. They want chaos, and they thrive on victimization. Nothing will change that.
