Look at the case like this.
A woman, of questionable mental acuity, accuses a man of rape with no evidence whatsoever.
A state adapts its laws so this decades-old case can be tried.
A jury finds that this alleged rape never happened.
HOWEVER
The same jury decides that the man DID commit a separate crime he was not accused of, and that he defamed the accuser by denying the rape allegation they found to be untrue.
