New White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly believes he has convinced President Donald Trump to abandon his pledge to construct a large and lengthy wall along the border separating the United States and Mexico, according to The New Yorker.

At a private meeting in tony Aspen, Colorado, two weeks ago, Kelly told a group of high-profile attendees that he had extensively discussed the border wall issue with Trump. Kelly believes he persuaded Trump to abandon his policy goal of erecting a lengthy wall along the 1,954-mile border which the United States shares with Mexico, according to The New Yorker.

Instead of a wall, Kelly said he suggested Trump could utilize a combination of complex monitoring equipment, continuous air surveillance and many miles of fencing can effectively secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

Such a combination of materials and surveillance would be called a “barrier” instead of a “wall,” Kelly told his audience.

The people who attended the meeting are current and former principals in the U.S. national security apparatus.

Trump will never abandon this pledge. It will never happen, but he is going to pretend he is building it.

The fact is there will be no new wall. Nothing is misleading and many people have been saying what Kelly is telling Trump now.

A lot of that is already used, like the pressure sensors.

The thing I don't get about the "wall" is Mexicans are very resourceful - tunnels, removing panels of the wall, using jacks to lift the beams, etc. How will a wall deter any determined person from crossing over?

This was one of the main issues he ran on. If he gives up on it, he may be done.

Im going to be honest. IMO this would be a huge positive for Trump on two counts:

1. It would show a willingness to listen to advisers when presented with better alternatives

2. Its 2017, we can do better than a physical wall which was a dumbed down idea for dumbfricks to begin with.

Kudos to Trump if this is true.

Why would we spend millions/billions on surveillance and monitoring which gives us nothing in the long run? Thats just kicking the can down the road. I would at least like something to show for the millions we spend, not just an open-ended surveillance policy that could be undone with 1 EO by the next president.

The rallies are gonna be kinda awkward next time around:

Trump: "What are we gonna build?"

Crowd: "A combination of complex monitoring equipment, continuous air surveillance and many miles of fencing!"

Trump: "And who's gonna pay for it?"

Crowd: *confused*

A combination of land mines and armed drones should be quite effective.

its not like the next president couldn't tear down that wall.

Not to mention, the wall will take years to build, likely into the next presidency where the next president coudl just abandon it.

You could probably get a bipartisan agreement on having drones and monitoring of the border. Hell, that doesn't sound like a bad idea to me.

The Daily Caller?

Your game is stale and you should point anger towards Trump not me.

No to mention, the majority actually enter the US legally and just stay here past their visa

Pointless to spend billions on a wall that can be bypassed with a $20 ladder.

Exactly, I believe we could all agree on something like this.

How so? If Kelly has convinced Trump to give up on a physical wall, then it is totally correct. Reporters actually did a good job of nailing Trump down to what he meant by "the wall". He clarified it would be a physical, "brick and mortar", wall. No room for, "well he actually meant cameras and surveillance". A physical, "bigly wall"
