The study found that the states that locked down businesses, churches, schools and restaurants for lengthy periods did not have lower death rates than those that largely remained open.

No fricking shite.

On another note, whatever happened to the suits by the gym in NJ against the state over the closures?

IIRC they sued claiming the choices in which businesses were allowed open was capricious.

That's why Asian countries are still struggling with spikes while their western counterparts have largely moved on.

It's sad that we live in a society that needs to be told via media, or "a study", or someone else what is so.

Wait till the study comes out that electric cars produce more carbon emmissions than gas cars.

I'm sure everyone is shocked that a group run by Steve Moore is praising Republican-run states.

Shocked.

(Florida has a higher per-capita covid death rate than California, btw)

Which according to the paper in question, is likely linked to the rates of obesity and diabetes more prevalent in Florida than California, which they tried to adjust for.

I'm not sold on this study yet though, it's in the "Working Paper" section of the NBER (national bureau of economic research). I'd like to see it become peer reviewed.

Florida is also the retirement capital of the universe and has a higher than normal average of people 60+ years old.

Whenever you have an aging population, you get people more prone to illnesses like this regardless of any other factor.

Okay, please point to the data that would show this to be different. Did New York and California actually out perform the other states when responding to COVID?

That's a poor attempt at adjusting. Why not for the full scope of comorbidities, or adjust for other demographics than age, or look into health system utilization that may have driven excess deaths?

The answer is because those have been done and they don't show Florida in a positive light, so they were ignored. Because this 'study' is just a right-wing attempt to paper over the disaster of far right policies during the pandemic.

The problem with lockdowns as conducted in the US is they're inadequate. If you're going the lockdown route, you need to follow the Chinese model and arrest anyone leaving their home anytime other than their allotted 2-hour window each day.

You and BamaPOS should personally do the arresting.

One of the few resort cards out there where LA doesn’t look that bad.

And how the frick does NJ screw up enough to get an F-? They had to make up a grade to show how shitty they were.

It's amazing how stuff we talked about on here at least two years back is suddenly being revealed like fresh news nobody had access to.
