The National Security Council has presented President Donald Trump with options to respond to North Korea's nuclear program — including putting American nukes in South Korea or killing dictator Kim Jong-un, multiple top-ranking intelligence and military officials told NBC News.

quote:

Both scenarios are part of an accelerated review of North Korea policy prepared in advance of Trump's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. The White House hopes the Chinese will do more to influence Pyongyang through diplomacy and enhanced sanctions. But if that fails, and North Korea continues its development of nuclear weapons, there are other options on the table that would significantly alter U.S. policy.

quote:

The first and most controversial course of action under consideration is placing U.S. nuclear weapons in South Korea. The U.S. withdrew all nuclear weapons from South Korea 25 years ago. Bringing back bombs — likely to Osan Air Base, less than 50 miles south of the capital of Seoul — would mark the first overseas nuclear deployment since the end of the Cold War, an unquestionably provocative move.

Looks like fat arse better find him a bunker somewhere.

Do things like this get leaked because the admin wants them to be? Gotta assume so.

They should send Dennis Rodman over there with $50 million dollars and tell Kim he can let the US take over, fake his death, and let him live live his life out on some island somewhere or get big dicked by the USA.

I would think so. Possibly was said in private to China leadership, first.

If you're looking to kill someone, the best way to start is by letting them know you're coming for them. Sounds like Obama logic.

Are all of these preemptive options? Those are terrible choices. The general quoted in the article is right, nothing happens without China. A meaningless strike like the one in Syria will do nothing but cost South Korean lives

If you want someone to knock off being a moron while not killing him and creating another refuge crisis, you let this leak.

Just infect Rodman with ebola then send him over there. That would be much cheaper

There are few hot war options against DPRK that don't involve Seoul being flattened by artillery (or now, possibly a Nuke). That's a good portion of 24 million people in an international financial center. No one's rushing into war against North Korea.

I don't think anyone is calling for war against NK, but you agree that something has to be done to curtail fat boy's nuclear ambitions, no?

Any military action by the USA or any of its allies would result in outright war and subsequent destruction of SK.

There are no pathways militarily here, and y'all need to accept that fact and get over it.

The only pathway is through China.

"Something" can only be done peacefully by the Chinese. So the ball is in their court.

What if something that has to be done can't be done? Kim could sink the global economy and kill millions of people on the Korean peninsula alone in a matter of minutes. The only solution here is a negotiated one, and that isn't going anywhere without the Chicoms on board.

There really is no way we can strike first and hard enough to prevent the Seoul damage?

Nope, not even a tiny, minuscule chance. The North has been preparing for a hypothetical invasion from US/SK for decades. They have massive amounts of artillery firepower, hidden and fortified. It would be impossible to get them all

I will defer to Navy, but I think the only way that happens is turning half of the peninsula in to glass, and even then, I imagine they have some kind of warning system and would unleash holy hell as soon as they knew.

No. You would have to glass the entire country to pull that off.

I don't think so. The artie battallions are largely dispersed and well-camouflaged, generally relatively close to the boder (Seoul is within about 40 mi of the border FWIW). Unless you could destroy the C2 linking command to the individual batteries, which I'm assuming the North Koreans have taken into account, I don't see how at least a couple thousand shells wouldn't get off.
