Sure he matters. He was fired for showing up in headlines for connections to Russian intelligence.

August 18, 2016 this story dropped:

quote:

In an effort to collect previously undisclosed millions of dollars he’s owed by an oligarch-backed Ukrainian political party, Donald Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been relying on a trusted protégé whose links to Russia and its Ukrainian allies have prompted concerns among Manafort associates, according to people who worked with both men. The protégé, Konstantin Kilimnik, has had conversations with fellow operatives in Kiev about collecting unpaid fees owed to Manafort’s company by a Russia-friendly political party called Opposition Bloc, according to operatives who work in Ukraine.

A Russian Army-trained linguist who has told a previous employer of a background with Russian intelligence, Kilimnik started working for Manafort in 2005 when Manafort was representing Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, a gig that morphed into a long-term contract with Viktor Yanukovych, the Kremlin-aligned hard-liner who became president of Ukraine.

Politico

August 19, he "quit" (Joshua Greene reports in Devil's Bargain that the Kushner gave him 30 seconds to quit before the Trump family hit send on a "Manafort fired story".

quote:

Paul Manafort, a professional Republican political operative since the 1970s, was supposed to impose order on Donald J. Trump’s chaotic presidential campaign. On Friday, the chaos devoured him. Weeks of sliding poll numbers and false starts had sapped Mr. Manafort’s credibility inside the campaign. A cooling relationship with Mr. Trump — who had taken to calling Mr. Manafort “low energy,” the epithet he once used to mock a former rival, Jeb Bush — turned hot last weekend when the candidate erupted, blaming Mr. Manafort for a damaging newspaper article detailing the campaign’s internal travails, according to three people briefed on the episode.

The interesting part is that the owner is a friend of Trump, and has been show to use the tabloid junk against opponents, and likely wouldn't target someone closer to Trump without his blessing. Although I'm not sure why anybody would care about the stories themselves. In addition, maybe the timing is coincidental, but it is interesting this came out the same day we found out about the FBI raid.

Seriously?

Manafort was let go August of LAST YEAR.

Manafort's problems are his own, not Trump's.

I agree, unless there is something we don't know, but I doubt that.

I think Trump will be able to distance himself, since he let him go, BUT some will focus on that link because that's what people do. Although those people would hate him regardless.

Depends on what the FBI found when raiding Manafort's home. If Trump is connected to any of this, they will know

The FBI counter-intelligence investigation into Russian coordination with the Trump campaign began July 2016 while Paul Manafort was still campaign manager. The reporting says that both Trump and Manafort's finances are being investigated by Mueller.

I think this means that trump is turning on manafort. The national enquirer was at the forefront of turning on Mike Flynn earlier this year.

This doesn't jive with Trump purportedly "obstructing" to end the Flynn investigation.

Oh, there is a lot we don't know. we didn't know manafort's house was raided until today. Considering he gave over a large amount of documents the day before the raid, someone suspects something.

I don't believe he will be able to. He isn't close to Manfort like he is to flynn, or his sons. But if they can link manafort to russians during the time he was with the trump campaign, trump is fricked.

Manafort worked for trump. if manafort has a stench to him, then it will leak to trump.

This is the whole point of the story. Throw manafort under the bus, and tarnish his reputation

I wouldn't be surprised if trump thinks manafort has flipped.

Maybe, but based on what we know, I think Flynn is more problematic since:

1. Administration was told of investigation prior to hiring
2. His access to National Security information
3. Trump trying to get investigation stopped
4. Presidential decisions and actions are more important than campaign decisions and actions.

Just so we're clear, you're posting a national enquirer article, in case you were blind or something.

Trump is close friends with David Pecker of the Enquirer. Joe and Mika said Trump offered to spike a story with the Enquirer before to have them back down on their negative coverage of him. If the Enquirer is publishing this it's not without Trump's approval which means that Trump thinks Manafort has flipped.

Yeah it does beg the question as to why a story that is pretty "meh" in the normal scheme of National Enquirier gossip is suddenly getting pushed suspiciously following the news break of the July raid.

The story itself isn't of any value, it's the timing and the Enquirer's relationship with Trump.

BUT a month ago, I spent multiple posts arguing with cad among others that the National Enquirer is not as reputable as the NYT's. So where are all these people (rightfully) calling out a fake news source, when the Cruz story broke, and whatever story that aforementioned argument was about?
