A Pearl man who runs a political blog is accused of sneaking into a nursing home where U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran's wife is bedridden and photographing her, then posting the image in a video political "hit piece" on the internet.

Madison Police arrested Clayton Thomas Kelly, 28, of Pearl on Friday night on a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. He's being held on a $100,000 bond.

Kelly is accused of sneaking into St. Catherine's Village in Madison, where Rose Cochran has resided since 2000, suffering from progressive dementia and now bedridden.

Cochran on Saturday issued a statement: "I have been fortunate to have a wonderful family, and like so many families, we are deeply affected by my wife's serious, long-term illness, that we consider to be a very private family matter. We will continue doing everything we can to protect my wife's safety and security."

Donald Clark, attorney for Sen. and Rose Cochran, said the Cochrans' "privacy and dignity have been violated."

"We became aware of an unauthorized picture, posted on the internet, of Mrs. Cochran, taken literally in her room by her bedside at St. Catherine's," Clark said. "Sen. Cochran retained my law firm on this matter, and we looked at various legal options. We notified the proper authorities, which in this case is the city of Madison Police Department."

Clark said St. Catherine's is also conducting an internal investigation.

Campaign sources say Kelly on Saturday, April 26th, posted an anti-Cochran, pro-Chris McDaniel "hit piece" video that included the image of Rose Cochran. The video and references to it were removed from the internet within a couple of hours.

Kelly operates a "Constitutional Clayton" blog, a Youtube channel and other social media. He has posted numerous pieces in support of McDaniel and opposition to Cochran, and appears to have interviewed McDaniel on video at least once.

A campaign spokesman for state Sen. Chris McDaniel's campaign said the campaign was not involved in the video Kelly did, and Kelly doesn't work for the campaign.

"Absolutely -- I've never even heard his name," said Noel Fritsch, communications director for McDaniel. A statement from McDaniel was not immediately available.

Scott Brewster, coalition director for McDaniel's campaign, contacted Saturday, indicated he was aware of the video.

"I do remember when it came out," Brewster said. "I think people made some phone calls (to have it removed). I didn't personally -- nobody personally talked to (Kelly). I don't know if anybody made phone calls about it. I'm not sure. Just, I remember all of a sudden it was gone."

Madison Assistant Police Chief Robert Sanders had little comment on Kelly's arrest.

"It's an ongoing investigation," he said.

McDaniel's campaign denies involvement, and denies knowing the guy. No reason to doubt the former, but as to the latter, there's a picture of them together. Make of that what you will.

Damn. That is pretty damn low.

Funny thing about this though, it probably helps Cochran.

If you really think McDaniel authorized him to do this then you are crazy.

That being said, it doesn't help his campaign at all. People create a blog and think they can change the world. This guy obviously cares a little too much about politics

When Bernard Kincaid first ran for Mayor of Bham, someone threw a brick through his campaign HQ window on the day of the election. Much umbrage was taken. Bernard was elected. If I had to bet, the brickthrower worked for Kincaid's campaign. Probably the same thang in this situation.

I dunno, the guy has been running this blog for quite a while and managed to get himself arrested for a felony. Unlikely an agent provocateur would go to those lengths. And you'd have to believe Cochran would be willing to go along with exploiting his wife. That's a level of cravenness that even the worst of the political class wouldn't stoop to. Well, maybe a few of them would, but I have to think they'd be few and far between.

Nor do I think the McDaniel campaign had anything to do with it, although it does seem they're more closely connected to this guy than they want to admit now. It does go to show how the fringe has become mainstream, though. The internet gives everyone a soapbox, and that's mostly a good thing, but this is one of the unintended side effects.

You're going to have to come with a little more than a picture of a nut job who managed to get into a McDaniel photo op and get his picture taken. It was probably an open to the public meet and greet like most campaign events are.

You work for the Cochran campaign?

Doesn't mean much when you're talking about a politician. They meet and are photographed with thousands of people.

I'm not from MS and haven't set foot in the state in over a year.

I'm not claiming this guy works for McDaniel, but the "never heard of him" doesn't fly

You have no idea how many "groupies" and hangers on these campaigns attract. Many are humoured, it's easier than having to worry about them going all cray cray on you.

Ask any one whose ever worked on one. Left or Right.

There's a picture of Newt Gingrich and I. Does that mean Newt knows me?

Guy will do some time. Jim Hood has a boner for vulnerable adult offenders. Rightfully so I will add.

Wouldn't shock me if he contacted the McDaniel campaign first and offered them the tape.

Dunno why folks can't get the use of "me" and "I" correct. Just take out the "of Newt" and see if it sounds correct. "There's a picture of I."

He was arrested by Mayor Mary Hawkins' Madison Police Dept. They pondered the case for a few days.

Mary has a 6 x 9 THAD sign in her yard on Hwy 51.

Go figure.

But Mary's Police Dept couldn't find their arse when looking for the young teenager who walked just 500 yards from home.
