If you want to cut the defense budget you can do it wisely by reducing your strategic ends, your political aims and be certain that you don't have a policy that requires a military that is larger than a military you are willing to pay for.

Basically saying that you get what you pay for. Makes sense.

He's also saying that if you don't try and occupy quagmires that you don't need a bloated defense.

Another novel concept.

I think he's saying: Only pay for what you need.

Mattis better keep his mouth shut unless he wants every defense contractor in the world releasing the hounds to try and stop his confirmation.

I hope he runs the DoD like this, but we need him confirmed first.

He's not even advocating cutting the defense budget. He's simply stating that the defense budget is tied to oir foriegn policy. If you want to have worldwide committments then you have to pay for a worldwide military.

U S 618 billion versus China's 158 billion and Putin's 60 billion - we need to step up our game.

The problem is not the size of our military. The problem is the military acquisition process.

You can thank Al Gore and Bill Clinton for that... The bulk of the FAR was rewritten under their watch and under their orders.

Not sure how that meshes with Trump's promises to rebuild our military.

You can make our military much better while trimming the Tumblrina level of fat off of it. We spend too much on the military and aren't getting proper ROI.
