Louisiana Bill Proposed to Allow Off-Duty Cops to Carry Guns in Bars

Sorry for the long title. Anyway: LINK

quote:

NEW BILL -- HOUSE BILL NO. 48: Would allow off-duty and retired police officers to carry weapons in bars and restaurants

quote:

Burns said current law, which allows an officer to carry a weapon into an alcoholic beverage outlet only "in the performance of his official duties," is unnecessarily stringent.

quote:

"I don't like your bill," Landry said last year. "Alcohol and guns do not mix. This is a bad, bad situation. ... I don't understand how this will enhance public safety."

Neither do I. Theoretically you would tell officers not to bring their weapon if they are going to be drinking. The problem with that is it likely will not be followed. The other problem I have there is, how often does a man or woman go to a bar and not drink? Not very often.
The other side of that is restaurants that serve alcohol, it is pretty often that I go to a restaurant for lunch or something and don't drink even if they do serve alcohol.

I don't support this bill, there are some other good ones being proposed though.

They should just go ahead and make cops exempt from all laws.

I'm all for gun rights but I don't like the idea of a bunch dumbasses packing while getting drunk. If cops have guns in bars then I should be able to carry in bars to defend myself from those idiots.

No fricking way. It should be up to the owners of the establishment whether they are going to allow legal gun owners to carry and they should have to make it clear whether they are allowed or not.

I don't think guns and alcohol are a good combo, so I would avoid an establishment that allowed them.

However, an off duty cop, and especially a retired cop, have no business having guns in a location otherwise not permitted by other legal gun owners.

Does Baton Rouge have any of these? I want to make sure I don't accidentally end up one.

Do not like. There is nothing special about being a cop that makes you immune to alcohol induced stupidity.

Could you imagine a fight breaking out in a bar with a couple of lubed up cops with guns attempting to get in the middle of it? As much as they think and act otherwise, an off duty cop isn't a cop, they're a citizen.

FWIW, I don't have a problem necessarily with cops having guns and alcohol at the same time.

I do have a problem with creating laws for normal people and exempting certain castes from them.

Thats fricking bull shite... If a normal citizen can't have his firearm, why should an off duty cop be allowed to?

Agree. And many of the local cops that I know in La aren't that smart to begin with.

I guess the redneck lawmakers can pound their chest and prove they are helping people with their gun rights or something.

Go back to that huge bar fight during M.Gras a few yrs ago, where several NOPD officers, all off duty, beat the crap out of several citizens in the bar. This bill would permit those same guys to have guns available the next time they went nuts.

re: Louisiana Bill Proposed to Allow Off-Duty Cops to Carry Guns in Bars
A few months ago there was a story in B'ham about an off duty cop going to a bar bathroom to take a crap, and leaving his service pistol on the toilet paper dispenser in the stall. A dumbass guy found it and left the bar. He goes to his friends house, and the friend buys it off him. The new owner picks up another friend and they go to a convenience store to buy some beer. The new owner goes inside to buy, leaving his friend in the car with the gun. he hears a pop, looks out the window, and sees that his friend has blown his brains out fricking around with a gun that he had no knowledge of how to operate.

Moral of the story: When you get that many idiots involved around a gun, somebody is probably gonna die.

The problem is that for society doesn't look at cops as "citizens" or "civilians" for some reason.

I see them as the exact same as every other joe blow. Just another guy with a job trying to make ends meet. If every one quit treating them like they're special we wouldn't have near the problems we do.

And let's quit putting up the facade that these guys are there to protect and serve. Most of them become cops because they want to see some "action", not because they want to protect and serve their fellow citizens.

re: Louisiana Bill Proposed to Allow Off-Duty Cops to Carry Guns in Bars
Just read over the bill.

Looks like they're just trying to redefine an "alcohol beverage outlet" as a business with a Class-A General retail license. That license is for businesses that serve alcohol and allow only those 18+ in Louisiana.

So, off-duty and retired cops can bring guns into restaurants that serve alcohol, but not a "bar." That does mean that the off-duty cops at Walk-On's on Sunday Funday could bring their guns. I don't like that idea.

I'm wondering if changing the definition of "alcohol beverage outlet" would affect the concealed carry license rules.
