Out of 18k+ applicants, we end up with 7 men and 5 women, and just about every shade of the rainbow...

Sorry, I am not buying that these 12 were the top 12.

Doesn't appear to be much testosterone in that picture.

Seriously, out of 18k applicants the "best" 12 magically ended up looking like a college admissions brochure cover? How convenient.

Yeah, the guy holding the selfie stick does look a little derpy...

You know absolutely nothing about these people, or the pool they were chosen from, yet accuse the women and minorities of being affirmative action picks solely because they were chosen over white male applicants. fricking snowflake.

NASA's diverse Class of 2017 includes six military officers, two of them doctors. It includes a marine biologist involved in Antarctic expeditions, a geologist who has worked with NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover, and a SpaceX engineer who might ride a rocket and capsule he helped design.

“We do things because they are hard, and then we crush it,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Raja Chari, a 39-year-old test pilot from Iowa, when asked about the opportunity to fly a spaceship.

The group ranges in age from 29 to 42 and hails from 10 states. Each member holds an advanced degree.

You think NASA would have chosen 12 white men had they been the most qualified?

Is it really hard to believe that in a melting pot country that this can happen? What would you reasonably expect.

Youre exposing yourself

Except black? It doesn't look like a tv commercial to me, just a normal set of what I'd imagine astronauts look like. The days of test pilot = astronaut are starting to fade, the have to be competent enough scientifically to justify the immense cost of them being up there.

And I'll add even though it isn't a popular opinion on here, until we find a much cheaper method of ground to orbit manned spaceflight will never make sense. I'm all for NASA and all the funding they need, but unmanned is the way to go and in the meantime work on better propulsion tech.

"Solely"? More like it would be incredibly shocking if the selection was blind in relation to race and sex.
Would you not be surprised if the selection was purely based on ability?

Well this just proves NASA figures there's no realistic way to get this group back from Mars.

That will change, we have both public and private manned space projects in the works. Doesn't change the fact that a manned program at the moment makes very little sense for ROI.
