Democrats lost because more registered republicans showed up that don't normally vote. There hasn't been some massive shift in American political ideaology. Trump just did a bang up job of motivating his base in swing states to show up to the polls.

Look at NC Tigah's thread. Trump got less votes than McCain and Romney. Democrats keep running candidates that are further and further out of touch with everyday Americans. When there's a candidate who isn't out of touch, the rallies are more massive than even Trump's.

I think poor voters are less likely to vote in those mid term elections and thus you are mostly getting the will of the middle class in those elections.

Democrats need to actually craft a message that speaks to the non-urban middle class if they want to win. Ultimately 80% of the electorate in America couldn't tell you who leads either party.
