This is why a college degree is now useless

Uh, yeah. Ok.

If a man on the street guy tries to interview me about something I don't know about, I'm either going to flat out say "I don't know anything about this" or just decline the interview.
These things hardly work out well for the interviewee.

Its not worthless, it just doesnt actually equate to the person holding it knowing anything

What it comes down to is there isn't anyone alive that truly believes we don't need tax reform. If you take the R and D out of the plan, I bet 90% of it everyone would agree on.

I would use the words “group think” but that would imply actual brain function. This is straight up parroting, a travesty considering how much money these people are borrowing to “learn.”

More like "why do we put so much emphasis into what the politically uninformed generation has to say." Kinda like the other day of the 19 year-old female blogger trying to school the country on politics. Give me a break.

The weird thing about that video is that 2 of the 3 things he brought up were super anti-socialist. Elimination of the death tax and small business tax relief??? You kids are capitalists lol.
Also, I will give those kids credit for the final 1 minute of the video where they at least show a modicum of self awareness.

Most people that vote are ignorant.

Same here. I am not so sure we'd get that same reaction from students elsewhere (looking at you West Coast).

No, it’s really not.
This is why it’s important to get an actual college degree in a STEM field and not a gender studies degree with a minor in renessaince queer theory from butt-frick-U
US colleges are still the best in the world at training engineers, scientists and computer programers. Don’t make the mistake of lumping that success in with the stupidity that these young socialists hold so dear to their tender hearts. Don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water. The right college degrees are still immensely valuable.

College is great. The problem is that HS and colleges don't get involved with critical thinking. It's either 'what I say is the truth' or 'there is no truth so everything is just fine.' Truth requires careful examination and students aren't good at it.
I demonstrated this in a graduate class many years ago.
There were about 20 students and I read the following position on saving the environment:
'In order to save the environment for future generations we will have to change certain lifestyle choices. We will have to adjust thermostats, we will have to drive more fuel efficient cars. It will be necessary to limit a lot of options. You don't need a second home at the lake. Every third offspring should be executed. The amount of money the govt spends on alternative fuels must be increased.'
After that short 20 second speech I asked how many agreed. All students agreed. Me: "So you want to murder every 3rd child?"
They were shocked. They are not accustomed to listening to information and analyzing it. The same applies to what they read.

If i were teaching today, i would do MANY assignments where i presented the students with a problem, idea, or statement asserted as fact and require the following answers from them
1. Is your immediate reaction to agree or disagree with the assertion or do you have an initial solution to the problem?
2. What information have i failed to provide that would make assessing the assertion more convincing one way or the other or understanding the problem better?
3. What information, if you discovered it, would tend to make you rethink your initial reaction
4. Try to find and supply any information you can find re: questions 1 and 2
5. Whatever conclusion you have drawn, can you articulate what you expect opposing conclusions might be and why that person would believe they are correct?
6. How would you seek to convince them that your understanding was correct

Bingo.
The odds that the kids interviewed are in useless degree programs are pretty high.
I was one of those kids 20 years ago, unfortunately. Useless liberal arts degree parroting the latest Dem talking points.
Fortunately my post graduate degrees are useful.

That's a good approach. Another approach is what I called 'the argumentation tree.'
Start with a proposition.
Have students give 2 reasons why it is wrong.
Then, have students give 2 reasons why each of the previous two reasons are actually wrong (4 arguments).
Wash, rinse repeat until you have 32 arguments out there. It seems impossible but it really works if you're thinking critically and organizing how your brain works.
