La legislature watchers: Tell me what happens to avoid the fiscal cliff next year.

There will be at least a billion dollar shortfall, if not 1.5b.
Do they just renew the temporary sales tax?
Do they undertake serious tax reform?
For reasons unfathomable to me, there is no political will to do the latter. And so I predict the former. Another cop-out from a bunch of self interested political animals.

Yeah, and I bet the renewal is temporary too
And they'll all go off and blame each other for the uncertainty

How many of y'all were republicans for jbe?

Sooooo
The governor is touting his plan to closed groups now. I suspect it will be public soon. The storm may actually have pushed it back some.
I suspect it will renew MOST of the temporary tax but not all of it.
They also might fiddle with some sales tax exemptions. They will probably also propose eliminating some income tax deductions (excessive itemized for example). And probably some cuts too (but a lot of it will be cuts to planned increases).
Republicans will bitch and moan and find some small things to complain about and maybe even block/change some inconsequential item. But for the most part, they will go along with 80% of it.

i doubt they'll go along even 1% with any permanent fix that could be seen as a JBE victory

The Republican response to everything is not to work on it, or to solve it, but instead to claim that it doesn't exist because "they don't believe in it."
Just wait. Right before the next session the Republicans in the legislature are going to start a publicity blitz that they don't believe the fiscal cliff exists.

That seems true. They will do some small permanent stuff (sales tax exemptions maybe?), but very likely the renewal (or partial renewal) gets another sunset date after the next election. Bond rating agencies will hate it, but it give Republicans hope of electing a Rep Governor and fixing it 'their way' whatever the hell that is.

Is there a body of workers anywhere in the state with worse job performance than the legislature?

Texas purchases Louisiana and annexes it (except for New Orleans which we immediately sell to California, along with Sharon Broome, for Mike Trout to the Astros).
Seriously it's been what, 200+ years since you've been a state and you STILL can't manage to be corrupt AND effective?

I thought out honorable governor was suppose to fix that.

As the former coach of LSU used to say "they don't have the chest."

A 1.5 billion dollar shortfall created under Edwards. Jindal's budget wasn't short this much, remember?

Yes, most of it.

Edwards idea of tax reform is yo change the tax code in order to raise taxes, so no; that won't happen.

Edwards never tried, he put together a study commission who came back with tax reform and spending cuts, and he promptly ignored the commission and cooked up his own plan with a new tax.

Tax reform is sorely needed, but that's not the answer to perpetual overspending.
Spending reform is what's really needed, and with only a pittance of fiscal conservatives in the legislature, the chances are slim.
History is not on the side of the working class in this state.
