In a two-page memo dated March 31 and released by the Washington Post on Monday, Sessions directed his top deputies to review all law enforcement programs, including investigations and consent agreements with troubled police departments, to ensure that the department's activities adhere to the Trump administration's goals of promoting police safety and morale.

Stating that it is not the "responsibility of the federal government to manage" thousands of local police departments, Sessions' memo notes that "the individual misdeeds of bad actors should not impugn” the work police officers perform “in keeping American communities safe."

The directive is a first step toward reexamining a key legacy of the Obama administration, which launched an unprecedented effort to force police departments to reform policies. During his tenure, Obama's Justice Department launched a total of 25 probes into local law enforcement agencies to examine issues like deadly use of force and relations between police and minority communities. By the time he left office in January, the department was enforcing 14 consent decrees with law enforcement agencies, including in cities like Ferguson, Missouri, Chicago, and Cleveland.

“I think there is concern that good police officers and good departments can be sued by the Department of Justice when you just have individuals within a department that have done wrong,” he said during his Senate confirmation hearings. “These lawsuits undermine the respect for police officers and create an impression that the entire department is not doing their work consistent with fidelity to law and fairness, and we need

There wouldn't be problems Jeff if the cops were actually punished for their abuses and the department's didn't cover them up.

The less federal oversight on anything the better. Let's remove federal funding from state and local police departments too

A good man had his life ruined because he justifiably killed a thug in Missouri 3 years too soon

As long as he is consistent with the state control stuff I'm fine with this. I'm afraid he won't be though.

Then you have more theft from citizens in civil asset forfeiture. Those departments aren't just going to let that money go without schemes to replace it. The problem is no one holds cops responsible for their misdeeds. Not the courts, juries or politicians. You let people run rampant with a badge killing or abusing citizens without punishment eventually the citizens will fight back and you'll see more Dallas shootings as a response. People with nothing to live for have nothing to lose.

I haven't killed someone or singled them out due to their skin color and who's racist pov led to their death. Mike Brown would still be alive if Darren Wilson's racist beliefs didn't start the events that led to Brown's death.

Theft and assault is what started the events that led to his death

If Michael Brown never stole, assaulted a store clerk, then got into a physical altercation with a police officer...you have to be a troll...at least I hope you are

You are full of shite. And saying "he would still be alive" is a stretch. He was a thug and a dumb frick. Thugs and dumb fricks both have shorter than normal life spans. Put the two together and... Well he probably? had a good chance getting shot at a young age. It is what it is

So why didn't the Justice Dept just go after the bad actors and not punish the whole Dept?
