The fifth amendment was written so that our government could not beat a confession out of a person, innocent or not.
It was not written so that a person gets to avoid being fired for malfeasance in office.
LAT is merely pointing out that our current extrapolation of 'taking the fifth' is far removed from the real intent of the bill of rights.
If a government worker 'takes the fifth' to avoid
admitting she screwed up, she should be fired post haste. If criminality is involved - which her 'taking the fifth' seems to imply - then charges should be brought and she should be prosecuted.
All without her cushy pension benefits.
