An alternative is universal basic employment.

Do you think it would cost more for the government to guarantee employment or the government to guarantee income?

we're going to have some demographic issues in a few decades as long as technology continues to advance. THAT is when we'll have an issue

The issues have begun, they will soon explode and proliferate with gusto. Bubble economics has paved the way for reductions in social stratification through automation.

Human labor is becoming more and more superfluous, and it's not just blue-collars, the white collar automation is well-underway.

It's rare that I agree with SpidermanTUba, but when I do, it is usually emphatic agreement.

Now, it's not real "employment" because they can't be fired, but just the satisfaction of knowing they have to get up and show up for a job somewhere in order to get paid. Maybe kick in some very modest incentives to get some real work done.

Hell, if they had to go to school and maintain a minimum GPA and progress towards a degree or certificate - I'd feel better about that than just paying professional, multi-generational layabouts.

A lot of folks wish they had to go to school.

I think the program would work.

As ludicrous as this story is, sometimes I feel I'd also like to receive food stamps and welfare checks eventhough I have a job. I'm getting taxed for them anyway and the government shows no sign of halting spending, so why should only moochers and lazy people benefit.

You can. Just ask your boss to lower your hours or pay.

Why sould I? I already pay the taxes for others to take these benefits, why shouldn't the people that pay in get it as well? I'd like free food.

Well, the 90 hour/week guys might start slacking off a bit.
