The states in this great nation need a voice in Washington. And it would be a great step toward draining the swamp.

I can just see the conversation now.
Senator's staffer to the senator "That was the governor on the phone. He said the legislature requests your presence by close of business today to discuss your recent vote on _____. Your plane leaves in an hour".

I agree. The House was meant to be the voice of the people 7 the Senate was the voice of the state & accountable to the state. The Senate was "The saucer that cools the coffee." It was federalism at it's best.

Then along came Populism and screwed that up.

The 17th Amendment is an abomination and should have never been ratified.

If you think the Republican governors were going to repeal the ACA, then that's nuts. Some Republican Governors were the ACA's biggest supporters, you had Kasich, Sandoval, Baker, Synder, and Hutchinson, all Republican and all came out in support of the ACA.

That's probably because states love the medicaid dollars that offsets health care costs the state would be paying themselves.

People love free shite and state governments are no different themselves.

Same concept as to why Big insurance loves ObamaCare.

Just saying that repealing the 17th amendment isn't going to solve the problem of getting the ACA repeal passed.

The 17th amendment was designed to stop things like ObamaCare from ever seeing the light of day.

Due to being accountable to the government of that state rather than the people of that state, those Senators would rarely, if ever, vote for legislation that ceded power from the states to the federal government, due to the fact that legislatures would recall and replace them. With direct election of senators, they became beholden to "the people", which in reality was lobbyists. It's very expensive to run for a statewide election every 6 years, so Senators have to pander to special interests to fund campaigns, those special interests often are attempting to carve out loopholes in federal law, regulations that punish competitors, or want to give more power to the federal government and weaken states' rights.

Without the 17th, most federal entitlement programs never would have passed the Senate due to their nature of passing on massive costs on to States to pay for (see Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, HUD, SNAP, Section 8, ect).

Exactly. And as your earlier post points out there are probably 50 little swamps that need draining also.

I have to step in and disagree. Up until recently the Democrats had dominated state legislatures across the country. I prefer electing Senators through state wide elections.

I disagree. I want to be able to vote for my senators directly. But I want senators to also be based on state populations (not the same as the house, one senator for every 1 million people for example). It's bullshite that a state like Delaware gets the same amount of pull as Texas.

Just to confirm...all these upvoters want to give more power to corrupt legislators, while also taking away power from people to directly vote for their own legislators..in order to return to system where corruption ran rampant, even by standards in those days?

"I don't like the result of the game, so I'm going to change the rules".

They do...they vote for senators in elections.

If by draining the swamp you mean, promoting a system where corruption ran rampant and is much likelier to result in shady shite than now?
