Racism is specifically the thought or act of believing that you are superior to other people because of the color of your skin. I do not believe that to be genetic.
I dont think that is the current definition of racism.
But anyway, its learned. Go see kids play together of different races. They have no clue the other kids are of a different race, nor do they care.

Because you have to believe that you are superior to other groups based on your skin color.
Would you call a group of people that formed, to support each other with advice and information on how to avoid skin cancer, that are UV intolerant racist?

I doubt we really ever see any tru racism. BUT for this threads sake, racism is not noticed as children, looked down at as high schoolers, and brought about once hitting the work force.

Agree. Racism is learned.

Whatever it is, it isn't confined to any one race. Recently, I was assigned to work on a project for a company that offers home delivery of medical products and prescription drugs. The project lasted approximately 4 months.
For whatever reason, or perhaps just by chance, approximately 70% of the employees of this company are black. Well, it wasn't necessarily the worst working environment I've ever experienced, but it was definitely an unpleasant experience. While I was able to form positive relationships and even friendships with some people there, I was predominantly treated as an outsider and made to feel "different" from the group as a whole. I experienced hostility, discrimination, and even what I would characterize as racism.
I had never been in a predominantly black working environment, and I'm just saying, I sure as hell didn't leave that place thinking, "If only white people were this oblivious to race."
Just being honest, and that's why it irritates me when some people want to pretend that prejudice or even racism is somehow a malady with which only one race is afflicted. That simply isn't the case.

The point is, you really have to believe you are better than another person based on skin color to be racist, by definition.
However in political context you can be racist for basically any reason.

maybe it was learned when homo sapiens invaded from Africa and killed the neanderthals off.

I think some people mistakenly equate someone having a preference to be with people of their own race as being racist.
Several years ago I read about an experiment that was conducted using different types of snails.
A bunch of different types of snails were put in a box together and dumped into a closed canyon to see what they would do when released.
When the scientists came back a month later to see what the snails did, the scientists looked for the snails and found out that all of the snails of the same type had segregated themselves into a group away from all of the other types of snails.
Does that mean all snails are racists?

It probably had more to do with horny male sails following similar female snail trails.

Does that mean those horny male snails are racists because they only want to have or prefer to have sex with female snails that are the same type of snail as they are?

Ingrained by culture, kids don't have a notion of it when they are young. They play together without distinction of skin color in their minds.
Posted on 1/24/14 at 12:36 pm to pistolpete23
It's definitely a learned behavior. Small kids don't hate people that look different, they're curious about them, and they're too young to understand the bigoted things that they may be hearing at home. I went to predominantly White (98%) parochial schools up until 8th grade, and I never detected a hint of racism from my classmates until middle school, which is the age when kids start to understand and internalize the indoctrination they're being subjected to. Kindergateners may hear the word "n****r" being used, but they don't yet know it's a derogatory term.

This isn't really always the case.
I remember seeing a black girl for the first time in preschool and telling my parents "there is a chocolate girl at daycare". I knew she was different.
That said, there is no doubt I have become more prejudice as time has gone on. Experiences can shape attitudes

Of course you realized that she was different, but did you have any negative feelings towards her? Noticing race isn't the same thing as being racist.

I didn't reply to you. Citwitt said kids don't notice color, at least that's how I took it.

They were the same species.
They preferred to be with the other snails that looked the same as themselves.
My point is just because people of one race prefer to be with other people of the same race that doesn't mean they are racists who think their race is superior to all other races.
