He framed the OP as a gotcha for liberals who cry for gun control after every shooting, when the "science" says the media is more to blame than the guns. IOW the argument is limiting the 1st amendment would do more to curb the violence than limiting the 2nd, but you never hear a liberal calling for free speech restrictions after a shooting.

it's not just that. they'd freak the frick out if somebody honestly suggested it
could you imagine the media's reaction to that policy proposal?

there's more science behind the media causing mass killings than gun ownership causing them
There's a link right there in the OP, and that link has several more links.
You can disagree with the premise and/or the "science", but just calling for a link in this thread is kinda lazy.

we need to adopt mainstream values of today to this problem of mass media. when the founding fathers drafted the protections of the press in the 1st Amendment, they could NEVER imagine a media like we had today. they clearly only intended to protect words written by hand or the printing press, and could never conceive of cable tv let alone the internet and streaming news coverage. it's clear they never intended for THIS to be covered by the 1st Amendment
No one should be able to stream news at faster than 56k. There really is no need for it. It's time for common sense media legislation.

Media has their share of warts, no doubt, but I have to ask, couldn't you say the same thing about the interpretation of the 2d Amendment? Did our forefathers imagine the assault rifle and high volume magazines? The 2d Amendment was written after our war for independence where we did not have a full-time trained/paid and substantial DOD. We had a fledgling police force (compared to today's standards)in most communities and there were no grocery stores every few miles. The fact that our citizens needed muskets for hunting to eat and to potentially be called up for service in a militia was very real. Today?
I have exercised my 2d amendment rights a few times, but I'm all about common sense gun laws that ensure guns are purchased by citizens who meet appropriate criminal and psychological background checks. If that means waiting 3-5 days, so be it. Now concurrently do we need to get the illegal guns off the street, absolutely! State and local police task forces should make this a priority to curb senseless violence.
Again, ALL about the 2d amendment enforced with some common sense that our forefathers would be proud of.

This thread is beautiful.
Well done, SFP.

I think it should be policy to release all sorts of false and humiliating info about the perp. Ie the motive was mental illnesses brought on by shame of infantile genitalia, or the motive was frustrated pedophilia, etc

1. It would be unconstitutional.
2. The media needs to self police itself to report responsibly, in a way that won't encourage others (focus on victims, not the killer).

That's a nice, unemotional killshot on the 2nd Amendment bashers.

You make a most excellent point here. Bravo to you! However, had you not presented it in the way that you did, I'd have stopped reading it after the very first line....

Well done.
I was in the process of swallowing the hook until I read the last sentence of the OP. Only then did I see the thing that you did there.

had we enacted this common sense press control, it's unlikely that the church shooting is inspired by the Vegas shooting
we have decided that a free press is more important than the lives of innocent children

Are you seriously arguing for government censorship?
Sounds weird coming from a conservative. Thought you guys cared about the First Amendment?
