Is a family of 4 that earns 97k/year middle class or upper class, on average?

I said "on average" in the OP, which means if you account for all 50 states, is the 97k 4 person family more often upper or middle?

Well that's a useless way to frame it, but I'll play along.

That's not "upper class" for a family of four in any population center in this country. And I'm talking even suburbs and outer-metros in the south.

Maybe, big maybe, in some rural areas where most of us have just never set foot.

Not upper class anywhere but extreme rural areas.

$97k/year = ~$5600/month after taxes.

Mortgage to live in a good school system ~1500/month
Car insurance ~250/month
Utilities ~250/month
Food for four ~1000/month
Gas for cars ~150/month
Phones for four ~150/month
Internet ~75/month
Necessities (clothes, haircuts, etc) ~100/month
TV/Entertainment ~$100/month

That's $3600 out the door for a typical middle class lifestyle leaving about $2000 for savings, retirement, college savings, vacations, incidentals, fun/dates, and any miscellaneous expenditures. No one in the upper class is having fun with only $2000/month.

EDIT - I didn't even factor in health insurance. How much does the employer provide?

Alabama/Louisiana = upper middle class. California? Lower middle class.

Then they aren't upper class. What's your point?

Further, in any respectable city, even the suburbs, $250,000 is about the minimum you'd pay to get into a good school system, which is something the middle class values.

I agree it was useless the way he framed it. He must not understand COLAs.

Median income here is around 90, so that would be very middle class.

considering the fact that most people live in metro areas, i will say middle class.

you can't live an upper-middle class lifestyle on 97k in the vast majority of metro areas.

Dirt poor, barely scraping by according to most people on this board.

For the record, i want y'alls input because someone in another thread said 100% of middle class americans qualify for obamacare subsidies, and the cutoff is 97k for a family of 4.
