Interesting commentary on today's media and why we should be suspicious in GQ

Thought y'all would be interested in this article on why we should question what we hear in today's media in this Glenn Greenwald interview:
GQ Greenwald Article
On the hypocritical stances the NY Times takes, it's not that they are for one party or another, it's that they support generally whatever party is in power:
And on the Sunday shows:
Listen, I've been saying you can't trust any media source on politics for a while now, but he's articulated the best argument, they are just a mouthpiece for the government and don't challenge what they hear. IDGAF what side of the fence you're on, but I think we all need to lend a critical ear and understand the facts that we are hearing from whatever media source is reporting on the news.
Facts such as:
- CBS should be disqualified as a news organization because of the failure to chase down government corruption that their employees were working on and the obvious ties of the CBS news president being tied to the white house.
- All NBC outlets should be disqualified as news organizations for editing the Trayvon Martin video and audio clips
- Fox should be disqualified as a news organization as well for similar failures to report facts that they knew about certain cases
etc.;
Enjoy the read.

On the hypocritical stances the NY Times takes, it's not that they are for one party or another, it's that they support generally whatever party is in power:
quote:
I think the Times has had a close relationship with the government in the last five to six decades. I mean, it's interesting, if you go back and read left-leaning media critics during the Vietnam War, they were saying a lot of the same things that left-wing media critics were saying during the Iraq War. That in the wake of 9/11, news-media outlets are disseminating pro-government, pro-war falsehoods by doing nothing more than talking to government officials and laundering their claims as reporting—as though the government is on the editorial board of The New York Times.....Yeah, where he's boasting about the fact that they don't publish things without the government being happy with what they're doing. And it obviously has resulted in the suppression of all kinds of important stories, which is the most inexcusable thing that can happen in journalism. And that has happened repeatedly at the Times. I think they've essentially become this mouthpiece for those in power
And on the Sunday shows:
quote:
Sunday shows is to ensure that the most powerful people come on their shows, which they accomplish by giving them a platform to basically spew what they want in an unchallenged manner. I mean, there's the appearance of adversarial questioning, but it's all very reverent.

It truly is fascinating how human beings can be trained to worship the word of the media.

I find it curious that you were able to name specific instances of bias for CBS and NBC, but relied on a generality for FOX.
Also, please remember that not all acts of biased reporting are equal. It's nearly impossible to recognize much less eliminate all bias. It's part of our human condition. Nevertheless, unbaised reporting should be the goal, and every reasonable effort to mitigate it and eliminate it should include observable courses of action taken by media sources.

Laziness. I just know from watching it I can name a few examples, namely employing Karl Rove to say anything as if he's intelligent. Keep in mind that I'm mostly aligned with a conservative philosophy but I am befuddled as to why they put some of these guys on when there are perfectly good conservatives out there.
IMO, Fox doesn't do it to the extent that the other news outlets ar guilty. I think this may be your point. I mean, actively changing the audio to incite a race war is pretty shitty. As is supressing Sharyl Atkisson's reporting.
Forgot to add CNN being run by a huge democratic fundraiser / shill and continuing to employ Candy Crowley for the stunt she pulled in the debate. Also on CNN is basically turning every topic into a racial discussion.
Unbiased reporting SHOULD be the gold standard, yet what Greenwald is articulating is that they have become a mouthpiece for the government because they don't challenge anything and take the government words at face value.
After having worked in media for a number of years, the only thing I can tell you is that the margins are thinner, and they have less editorial staff. But that's a weak sauce, bullshite excuse because the average guy on the street like us can find out the truth. Why can't paid professionals?

Thank you, ironsides, for posting this. A very interesting read.
When Greenwald was asked about a Hillary Clinton presidency, this is what he said:
That confirms my cynical thoughts and is pretty discouraging. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
When Greenwald was asked about a Hillary Clinton presidency, this is what he said:
quote:
Hillary is banal, corrupted, drained of vibrancy and passion. I mean, she's been around forever, the Clinton circle. She's a fricking hawk and like a neocon, practically. She's surrounded by all these sleazy money types who are just corrupting everything everywhere. But she's going to be the first female president, and women in America are going to be completely invested in her candidacy. Opposition to her is going to be depicted as misogynistic, like opposition to Obama has been depicted as racist. It's going to be this completely symbolic messaging that's going to overshadow the fact that she'll do nothing but continue everything in pursuit of her own power. They'll probably have a gay person after Hillary who's just going to do the same thing.
I hope this happens so badly, because I think it'll be so instructive in that regard. It'll prove the point. Americans love to mock the idea of monarchy, and yet we have our own de facto monarchy. I think what these leaks did is, they demonstrated that there really is this government that just is the kind of permanent government that doesn't get affected by election choices and that isn't in any way accountable to any sort of democratic transparency and just creates its own world off on its own.
That confirms my cynical thoughts and is pretty discouraging. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Why the internet is so important IMO. There is such a wealth of information out nowadays, and tv is most likely to give you the least factual, most sugarcoated, and most biased news out there. The internet is where the playing field is leveled, and if they get a hold of it we're fricked.

Follow the money of the MSM and it all leads back to war profiteering. MSM is heavily entrenched in the military industrial complex

Good Lord. If a liberal posted something you can guarantee it wouldn't be calling out liberals. There is literally nothing Obama or Harry Reid/Nancy Pelosi et al could do that Rex, Spidey and Decatur couldn't defend.
The poster is calling out everyone. No liberal will do that on this board. I am finding that is the big difference between the left and right. The right is forming a two groups (GOP and Libertarians). The liberals are all sticking together.

The numbers indicate most Americans are getting their news from the internet rather than televised cable news media outlets now.
Sure, people still tune in to view for cheap entertainment, but the MSM is up in arms over the fact that viewers verify from their online source of choice instead of the Jew tube these days.

FWIW, I agree with you. My question was not intended to "call out" the original poster. It was really simply a question.
I agree that FOX is biased. I also said that everyone is going to be biased to some degree, and eliminating bias is a worthy thing to strive for even if it can't be fully achieved. I also pointed out that all acts of biased reporting aren't equal. Some are much worse and even quite deliberate, as seems to be illustrated in the examples provided for CBS and NBC.

Still, I wonder how much of the nielsen numbers are airports, gyms, and hotel lobbys, and how much of it is active viewing.

I believe this. Especially when you look at weekly news podcast downloads vs. tv news ratings.

The New York Times tends to support whichever party is in power?

Chuck Todd is pretty much a known Dem operative so he will probably host MTP soon.

At the end of the day, they supported bush on the Iraq war. Said Saddam had WMDs. They basically support (begrudgingly) whatever the White House tells them to support.
