China would stand to make trillions as fort of a long term investment in a re-unified Korea. And in the process of owning the investments will have sway on SK to an extent. Sure Japan and the west would invest as well but China stands to gain the most

And with no DMZ China sees US troops pulled back to Japan, Guam, Okinawa

Korea was a buffer to China, but lately has been a thorn attracting too much attention

As many have said already, I really don't have a problem with Chinese ownership of North Korea. That being said, as others have also mentioned, I'm not sure South Korea will accept anything other than unification. They would rather North Korea stay North Korea than North Korea become the equivalent of a Chinese province separated by a river.

(1) Who are the possible replacements? I'm not expecting a North Korean version of George Washington, but are there any viable options? Does anybody know?

(2) How do we keep the ChiComs from installing a puppet who will simply rubber stamp what Beijing dictates?

i was talking to a friend irl yesterday and basically you can't create a worse government to run NK, so 1 is pretty irrelevant. as far as 2, that's a likely result and i think the world would be a much better place as a result

we can't see NK in this objective bubble and hope for some ideal replacement. we have to deal in reality which means considering the current status of NK as well as the current status of the international (esp Asiatic) situation

we just have to ask: is this change going to be better? and almost any change will be

i'm not an expert, but i don't think SK wants to deal with NK (China doesn't want this, which is why they've let NK fester for so long). i think SK would be happy with a more traditional inter-state relationship (immigration, travel, trade, etc) so they don't have to foot the bill to literally re-educate and foster 30M people. the benefits are a frick ton of safety and a normalization of relations, which outweigh whatever strategic benefits reunification would create.

I'd argue that American presence in the region is why there hasn't been a war to this point.

i don't think we're going to pull out of SE Asia. if the NK problem is "solved", we may de-escalate our military presence in SK (b/c at that point it would be a bit of overkill). we're going to have a military presence and cooperation with SK and Japan for a long time. Japan is still basically a military protectorate of the US, right?

I always considered it more a cultural need for reunification than any strategic benefits. I don't think SK has a problem with China running the place necessarily as much as they want all Koreans to be apart of one Korea.
