These people are fricking unreal.

It's not price gouging.

It's simply supply and demand whether there is a flood or not. The price will naturally distribute goods where they are needed. Anything else is price controls plain and simple.

No such thing as price gouging.

That said.

I know exactly how this thread will turn out.

There is only one case of price gouging in America that I think is uncalled for...

I paid $20 for 2 pieces of white bread with a slice of turkey in between in Chalmette in late September of 2005.

It isn't free market, it is exploitation.

So you're cool with $100/gallon gas when trying to evacuate the city? Noted.

And when he held the gun to my head and said, "give me everything you have and I won't kill you," it seemed like a fair deal at the time, the market for survival being what it is these days.

Or perhaps something external, like a storm and epic flood, is threatening your survival. The economics are the same.

Is that what all the exclamation points are for?

Normally you would be right, but taking advantage of people when a natural disaster comes by is morally and ethically wrong.

People would rather not even have the option of buying a $40 case of water bottles? Inflated prices due to inflated demand and scarcity of replenishment help ration goods for improved access vs hoarding and flipping for profit.

I just know that your entire argument will be based on emotion.

There won't be a single valid point made regarding actually getting goods to people. It will all basically be "but it's mean" type stuff.

Or you are a short sighted business owner who will gouge prices for a quick buck, but lose constant business and be either bankrupt or forced to sale in 5 years

It is, by definition, price gouging. What you're actually arguing is that there's nothing wrong with price gouging. I disagree, but even if these folks aren't prosecuted, it would be acceptable to have them put on blast on social media and "let the market play out."

There is no good answer to this.

Yes. It is exploitation in a lot of cases. But how do you decide when it crosses that threshold? A dollar more? $5? $20?

And how do you decide if its exploitation or if its keeping hoarders away from buying all the goods for themselves?

It is impossible and frankly, a dangerous precedent to try to regulate any "happy medium"

All you guys against "price gouging" I am sure the government will take care of you well since you reject the free market.

Yes, but say it's hard to get supplies into town during a disaster. If I charge "market" prices to the first few guys, I may be able to afford to hire The Pirogue Guys to deliver more water for me.

Also, if I let you control my prices because of this "natural disaster" someone else will say it's a natural disaster when his dad has a heart attack and I'll have to agree to price controls for that too

Is that what you want??? No, I didn't think so.

Nah $42.99 for a case of water is price gouging no matter how you try to spin it.
