Once you get to know Russians they are great people with good senses of humor who are less boisterous than Americans. They do have a stereotype of Americans as overly friendly and boisterous.

I knew one Russian guy who can be described as a misanthrope but he was pretty smart and not a jerk. Many Russians are just a little bit more reserved around foreigners but if you get to know them they are pretty cool. They are very generous to their friends.

Dated a Russian girl for a time. Her folks were very, very suspicious of American men. High morals, incredible work ethic, and exceptionally intelligent.

Her family was clannish with other Russian families, but I suppose that's somewhat normal of first-generation immigrants.

I can't say that they were warm to me, but I deeply respected them.

I think it's mainly a difference in culture. Russians are more reserved than Americans and usually won't smile or say hi when passing by; they keep a serious demeanor. I see how this can come off as being unhappy or inhospitable to us and other foreigners but when they are with their family and friends they are just like us.

Some of the happiest people I know are Russians.

Algerians are the worst ones that I've met. But, I haven't met many Russians that I can recall.

ever met are Russians....followed closely by Germans. I met one super pleasant, outgoing Russian in Thailand....and tried...Lord how I tried to connect to some others, but no go. I talked to native Thai....they LOVE Aussies...Americans....and tolerate Russians and Germans.

Could be you, Russians are generally repulsed by anyone they perceive as weak....., you aint a snowflake are ya?

It's women under 25. They're fat and disagreeable to the point that the only way they can get the attention from men that they pretend doesn't matter to them is to put out, and when even that doesn't get them what they're looking for, they turn into pure counts.

I have always found Russians and Greeks to be similar: very distrustful of outsiders, especially Americans, but very hard working and congenial once you break the ice and get to know them.

Germans are great people. Uptight but great. My sister lived there for several years and I've been there many times. I agree on the Russians. Never been there but met many. Japanese are equally uptight and I'd say much more inhospitable than the Germans.

Try the Middle East. They want your money but don't really want you there.

I have been to St Petersburg, several times. I found the sites and people very interesting. They were very aware of US politics and enjoyed discussing them with me. The people in that city are far more in-shape than many Americans. I really didn't see many fat people under 40. They are more reserved in public, often not smiling or walking in a brisk pace (like NY). The women are really great, as they dress up very nicely when running errands and going to the mall (as opposed to the sorority long t-shirt and running shorts uniform). I'm marrying a Russian girl, in the Spring, so I definitely give them a thumbs up. I am so glad Clinton lost, as it would have been very stressful. Moving her to America, while Clinton beat the war drums, would have been tough on her and her family.

Most are hospitable. As to unhappy, the Iranians take the cake, followed very closely by the Saudis.

Germans are Germans, they can´t help it. Those that have travelled or are of higher standing, are quite pleasant.

Russians are weird. Not bad, not good, weird.

Thais love everybody.

Aussies are loud and obnoxious. New Zealanders, as well.

Personal experience. Your mileage may differ.

I have spent time with Russian woman outside of Russia and they are great beyond description.

Worked for a US company owned by a multi-national German company and it was tough. Very inflexible but lower management levels were OK.

Worked with many from England and they are the most insufferable bastards ever put on earth.

Nah the Chinese are the worst. But, like us American tourists, they don't know how bad they are.

Russian tourists are awful and they know it.

Perhaps the biggest difference is that you can meet middle class Americans traveling the world. It's not the case for Chinese and Russian world travelers, who are often insanely rich and not used to having to wait in lines, show respect to service industry employees, or be a decent human being.

Every culture has it share of assholes and awesome people. I live in Germany and I know plenty of assholes and I know some very nice people. Same for back home so I wouldn't say it is more in one culture or another not in at least any developed nation. My question is how do we know that you are not the one who is unhappy or inhospitable ,basically an a-hole?
