Don't forget that these are specific areas within the body.

American Kidney Fund

American Lung Association

National Kidney Foundation

They do help and can give you even more resources to check into.

Because my own prescription drugs were definitely included in my yearly max out of pocket. I pay $0 for prescriptions since my operation in early March.

I believe that prescription drugs are covered, provided they are on the formulary for the plan. So, if his mother's cancer drug isn't on the formulary, then it'd be kind of like going to an out of network doctor. Your limit doesn't apply.

Very sad to hear about her condition. Cancer plays favorites with no race, age, sex, religion or anything. It truly is evil on this Earth.

Praying that God will dispatch to you angels of healing, comfort, strength and hope to help your mom, you, and your family get through this.

Been doing some quick reading... it looks like Votrient has only been approved by the FDA for treatment of cancer in soft tissues. It's likely insurance companies are not approving the drug for kidney tumors?

Your link to that?

For example, a plan with a separate cap on pharmacy benefits today can keep that limit in 2014, with the limit capped at $6,350 for individual coverage or $12,700 for family coverage. But a plan with no drug spending limit today does not have to cap members’ out-of-pocket spending on pharmacy at all in 2014.

Soft tissue was an additional, approved indication in 2012. It's initial approval was for advanced renal cell carcinoma about 5 years ago. One of the many new kinase inhibitors (Tyrosine in this case).

Sorry to hear all of this.

If you don't mind me asking, what region of the country is this thing happening?

Look, I'm as big a critic of the current President as anyone on this board, but this thread is NOT the place for such.

There are many other threads where that is welcome. Not here, please.

My thoughts and prayers to you, Rob, and to your mother. I know there are websites out there that allow you to raise money for causes.

A lot of kind words and well-wishes in this thread, and that is refreshing to see.

At the end of the day ... family is family ... we can likely unanimously agree on that.

Best wishes, Rob ... I hope that you are able to find a workable solution and enjoy as much time as possible with your Momma.

God Bless her and your family.

And to the person who said that his mothers dementia home is costing 4k/month, that is a very obscene injustice.

Sorry about the situation Rob. As one who has lost a mom, dad and a stepmother to cancer you'd think I might have some sage advice for you and your family's predicament. I don't, other than your trying to stay strong for your mother's sake.

Has your mom consulted with a urologic oncologist ?

Hard to comment without knowing specifics about your mom's overall health, but:

Removal of the kidney can still be appropriate in the setting of metastatic disease

Was there a discussion regarding if she is a candidate for IL-2 therapy. It is the only therapy that can cure (with the trade off of extreme toxicity / side effects).

Where does your mom live?

Man, really sorry to hear this. Explains why we haven't seen you around.

$2.8k a month?????? Did you get denied treatment from the insurance company?

I have had issues with my insurance before (am on an expensive drug myself). Normally it's been some sort of issue where the doctor hasn't given the right information. I would talk to the physician prescribing the treatment and have his office talk to the insurance company.

I would also talk to the insurance company yourself.

Often times the prescribing physician's office will be able to help with getting you the financial aid you need.

I really hope this works out for you. Prayers sent.

I'm really sorry to hear about your mom Rob. There have been plenty of links posted already so I do not have that much to add. I will pray for you and your family.

I will add that delaying things can be quite surprising. My sister was diagnosed with a level 4 Glio in July 2010. They gave her 9 months max to live. She did the Chemo and radiation after 2 surgeries. While the tumor is still there she has had no growth since her treatment. I know when it starts growing again it will be very aggressive BUT these 3+ years have been very special to spend time together. The cancer support groups are quite an amazing experience as well. My sister is viewed as a walking miracle by her doctors.

God Bless!

Try GSC's website too.

Well, it looks like that wouldn't be a concern for asurob's mother if she bought an insurance plan now.
Stop it.
