How Should the West Respond to Putin

Assuming that what appears to be happening is happening, and Putin is simply taking back parts of Ukraine because he wants to and can, how should the US and Europe respond?
What will happen in real life is that the West will "blast" them with sanctions and "cripple" them with big talk. In response Putin will ironically accuse the West of violating international law.
What should be done? No one wants send kids to Europe to fight Russia and maybe China. I don't know the answer.

I say let Europe handle their shite. We’ve tried to help keep things peaceful over the years and all they’ve given back to us is a bunch of fat jokes.

Some of them do nothing but trash the US and criticize the US for sticking their nose in everyone else’s business. But at the same time want the US to be their world police. It’s not like they’re all some poor countries with small populations either. They can prop up their own militaries more but they choose not to

By the shite show in Afghanistan we did, but China is actually very, very determined to have Taiwan, more than Russia wants Ukraine. While I suspect this thing with Russia may be a bit of a farce, I have no such thoughts when it comes to China and Taiwan.

Obviously that's got to be fixed before we take on the CCP, but I'm thinking that's beyond repair at this point unless several good things happen to go right in our favor.
