I'm not reading this whole thread so I have no idea what has already been said...just responding to the OP...
Appalachia and the issues that exist there are %100 due to economical factors...jobs are non existent...except for logging and coal mining industries or tourism...of which those are being depleted as well (except tourism)...this has led to schools and governments that have no money ...from all this is the METH epidemic sweeping that area of our country...its the only way to make money...and the lack of education, poverty, etc...lends to depression and a turn to drugs as a coping mechanism...its actually quite sad...
