Obama and Carson both properly used the word and both were very poor choices to describe slaves.
Obama happens to be a very comfortable charismatic public speaker, thus he qualified the use of the word more eloquently than Carson. That's the only difference.

There is literally no difference in the way these two used the word immigrant to describe slaves. Now for sure, that is stretching the word immigrant, I mean if a man kidnaps a woman, that woman isn't suddenly part of his family, just in a different way; but neither man meant any harm by the use of the word.
