Heidi Heitkamp tops Trump’s list for agriculture secretary

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp has emerged as President-elect Donald Trump's leading choice for agriculture secretary, sources close to the transition tell POLITICO.
The first-term Democrat from North Dakota and member of the Senate Agriculture Committee has been a vocal advocate for farmers and broke from her party on several controversial policy issues, including the labeling of genetically modified foods and environmental protection for wetlands and waterways.
A special election to replace Heitkamp would almost certainly turn her seat over to a Republican, so the choice would give Trump a chance to appear conciliatory to Democrats, albeit with a lower-profile Cabinet role, while allowing the GOP to bolster its Senate majority.
Heitkamp's office and Trump's transition team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Heitkamp, who met with the president-elect at Trump Tower on Dec. 2, is facing a tough race in a deep red state in 2018. In a further sign she is a strong contender for a Cabinet post, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell met with North Dakota Rep. Kevin Cramer on Tuesday about a potential open Senate seat. A source close to the transition said gaining another Republican Senate seat was on the list of reasons for picking Heitkamp.
It remains unclear whether Heitkamp would accept the job. Democrats are hoping she'll turn it down.

Heard her on NPR, she seems intelligent enough.

I've said it before, she's not awful, relatively level headed.

What's your problem with ethanol? It reduces the amount of oil needed and is a renewable resource.

Damn if that ain't a ND woman, I don't know who is...

She doesn't make my corn rise, but maybe she could still do a good job.

Biggest part of this.

A) It's being propped up by government subsidies.
B) It drives the price up on food, both for human and livestock consumption, either through the corn being used for ethanol instead of feed, or farmers planting corn for ethanol instead of other crops due to (A) above.

It's unstable. I am tired of filling my 2 chain saw or boat motor up and having to add gas stabilizer to keep the crap gas from clogging my carburetor. It also decrease gas mileage.

Actually its worse for the environment and has a larger carbon load when you take in to account the extra energy used in refining it. Add to that all the other bs with it that has already been listed.

Yeah. If ethanol has to be made they will have to do it if from something a hell of a lot more efficient than corn, like the algae or even switch grass.

So you're against American farmers being profitable?

Why should they be artifically propped up by the govt more than anybody else, especially when all this oil we found comes online?

This most certainly is a ploy to increase the Republican majority in the Senate. Her chances of reelection are slim in the 2018 mid term election.

So where do we start? It's worse than welfare because we mandate it must make up 10% or more of gas. It's still price protected in such a way that the powerful co-ops are getting rich but the farmers still struggle. It's shite for small engines and destroys a boat, lawnmower, and a chainsaw every second(hyperbole). It encourages farmers to plant otherwise shitty land which permanently destroys habitat for the ducks I love to hunt. It makes my steaks more expensive. It encourages farmers to plant corn instead of other crops. It's inefficient. Oh, and again, it's welfare that both Republicans and Democrats can get behind because they all love them some Iowa votes but the farmers still are getting largely fricked. frick ethanol...

Unless trade deals are rewritten and foreign markets opened to US commodities to level the playing field then the government will subsidize agriculture in one form or another. The alternative is to import the vast majority of our food from countries that have virtually no regulations regarding what chemicals can be used. This doesn't even take into account the fact it would be very easy to orchestrate a major terrorist attack by contaminating our food supply if a large percentage of it was imported.
If you think imported oil makes the US a hostage to foreign interests, it's nothing like depending on foreign countries for imported food. American consumers have NEVER had to do without an abundant, safe food supply or they would be more appreciative of the American farmer and not bitch about things like ethanol subsidies which are a very small percentage of the federal budget. And by the way, the oil companies are subsidized as well.
