Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed a bill Tuesday evening to retire the last state flag in the U.S. that includes the Confederate battle emblem.

His office announced a signing ceremony at the Governor's Mansion, two days after a broad coalition of legislators passed the landmark measure to change the flag.

As soon as the Republican governor signed the bill, the flag lost its official status.

If a person is passionate about flags, are they flaggots?

I mean, is this really the hill people want to die on?

The real issue is that I am willing to bend and allow some change. The other side is not as considerate.

Saves a lot of money and time. Wherever you see an empty flag pole they can say the flag is flying.

The flag was voted on to remain by almost 65% of voters in 2001.

19 years later, the legislature removes it without a referendum by the people and will instead force people to vote on a new flag with pre-selected options, with the original flag not being included.

I guess the good news is that Mississippi wasn’t the last state to have a confederate flag on its flag.

I have a suggestion for the replacement design:

It works on so many levels.
