Gonzales Group Launches Effort to Recall Councilmen
Group Says Failed Leadership of Vessel and Lacombe Has Already Cost Gonzales Too Much

WHAT: A group of concerned citizens called SaveGonzales announces that they have filed separate petitions with the Louisiana Secretary of State seeking recall elections for Gonzales City Councilmen Timothy Vessel and Gary Lacombe. The committee co-chairmen will make a brief statement and will be available for comments following the completion of filing.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 23, 2014
5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Carlico Cafe
1506 N Airline Hwy
Gonzales, LA 70737
225-647-2233

WHO: Chuck J. Leblanc, SaveGonzales Co-chair
Wandetta Reynard, SaveGonzales Co-chair

Both will be available for one-on-one interview

WHY: The group says that over the past 16 months the two councilmen have been more concerned with playing politics than serving the people that they were elected to represent. In the wake of council disagreements over zoning changes, operating budgets, and emergency services, SaveGonzales believes that recalling both councilmen is in the city’s best interest.

These council man jobs seem like pointless positions.

Recall them all.

They actually are important as they approve the city budget, permitting, economic development, recreational parks, emergency services and more. These two councilman decided to make poor decisions to make the current administration look bad. They both had hopes of running for mayor next election to save the day. The citizens have seen the light and acting on it.

Is this all about them turning down that last business proposal? That site is one of the last ones in the city limits and it's in a prime location. The council has been planning on using that plot for a mixed use development with housing and commercial businesses. Approving an industrial company for that site would be good in the short term, but would not have produced as much tax revenue or jobs as a mixed use development.

Personally, i probably would have approved the zoning change, but it's not worth recalling gary. He's a good guy

Have you been to a council meeting? Gary ask some dumb questions and does what Irvin wants. Gary isn't a bad guy just hanging with the wrong crowd. The zoning issue with Priceco was just the nail in the coffin. The didn't want it for mix development, they want retail. The area is next to a sewage treatment plant and no retail would build there. Gonzales paid an economic development firm to identify and recommend a business for that zone and Crawford electric fit the bill. 40-50 high paying jobs along with over 2 million in counter sales would have been great tax revenue. Waiting for a Gap to move next to sewage would never happen. All the zoning in the area was C-2 (industrial and commercial) while that plot was C-1 (commercial only). Their reasoning was "spot zoning" if they changed to C-2. The planning and zoning commission and the city attorney both stated on the record that it was not spot zoning. They still would not budge. There is more that they are doing that is disturbing but this one captured the headlines.

I figured they were trying to turn that neighborhood into mixed use due to its proximity to the new Edenborne development, the Burnside "main street" area, and Tanger. I didn't realize that there was a sewage treatment facility right there. As I'd said prior, I would have approved Crawford, but what can I do. I don't have a vote on the council and I live outside the city limits so... I didn't even realize that Gary was on the council. The last time I saw him, he was running against Smiley for Assessor.
