Relative to other affluent professions, physicians are more consistently conservative especially in Texas where I practice.

As far as within the biological sciences where my undergrad, research and masters background is it is more liberal but it's mostly related to the GOP's resistance to evolution and science funding. I'd say the resistance to conservatism in the biological sciences has a lot to do with the religious overtones (and historical religious rejection of biology) as the overwhelming majority of biologists fall in the atheist/agnostic spectrum.

All that being said, in real life most "normal" people dont shun or scorn you for run of the mill political beliefs that differ from theirs. Where the disconnect comes, at least from what I see on this board, is where some people believe it should be socially acceptable to say ANYTHING without social consequence. You're free to say black people are poor dumb social welfare leaches but don't be surprised when people look at you funny.
