New Jersey doesn't allow you to pump your own gas as well.

It would have to be more than that. Consider the time it takes to fill your vehicle, and factor in the cost of the labor for that time, plus the cost of the attendant for sitting around waiting for someone to drive up.
Plus self service requires a guy sitting in the station... so even when it's slow you have the same labor costs. Probably higher liability with self-serve.

This is assuming that there is a steady stream of cars constantly filling up.

The person inside is also selling drinks, snacks, etc. Also don't full serve stations also have an inside person for that as well as baby sitting the register?

Back when the illustrious Gov. Corzine proposed self-service, his experts estimated NJ drivers could save 5 to 7 cents per gallon with self serve. WOW!!! for a nickel a gallon, a whole DOLLAR on a tankful, I'm not willing to put people out of work AND stand in the rain pumping my own gas.
How much gas do you typically pump in the course of a shift?

You don't have gas pumps covered like a carport? Why would your hands smell like gas? Are you mentally challenged and actually need someone to pump your gas?
What a stupid way to create jobs.

Prices in Oregon flucuate wildly - even from station to station.

No, Asshat, we actually DON"T have pumps covered with a carport in most places. It has nothing to do with my mental capabilities. I have pumped gas in other states but I PREFER to have someone serve me. Much like I PREFER to have someone cut and color my hair, serve me food in a restaurant when I'm perfectly capable of cooking at home, mulch my gardens even though I'm capable of using a rake. What part of THAT is hard for you to understand? You (collective 'you') may not always end up with gas-smelling hands but it DOES happen on occasion, or you accidentally drip some on your shoes...are you saying it doesn't ever happen? It's worth a few pennies for me to sit in my warm, dry car and stay clean.

Based on your argument in this thread, I find this unlikely. Your comment about not getting rained on is quite possibly the dumbest argument I've ever seen on this board. Gas stations are typically covered and they likely would also be covered where you are if the stations were self serve (i think you're lying about the covered pumps thing). Also, 5 to 7 cents is a lot.

I prefer to pump my own gas. Why would you take that right away from me.
Do you tip the guy pumping your gas? Do most people?

You do know there's a bathroom inside, right?

seriously??? Have you ever been to a NJ gas station bathroom? Most are NOT inside. They're a door on the side of the building with the most disgustingly filthy facilities imaginable. Even though some do have inside facilities, why would I want to go inside and wash my hands when I could stay warm in my car and have someone else do it?
Seriously people---do you ever go to the drive through at the bank? Dunkin Donuts? McDonalds? Are you physically unable or mentally incapable of walking inside and placing your order? No, of course not, you like to stay warm and dry and not wind-blown in your vehicle. Same idea. It's not difficult to understand. And the states that have self serve---it's very difficult to find full service stations, so it's not like you often have a choice in the matter. I'm happy keeping NJ full service.

Additionally, not all businesses offer a person the right to serve themselves, so why should gas stations be forced to?

And where do you live that you've never seen a wind-driven rain that would drench you even with a canopy?
