Gab is suing Google for allegedly violating antitrust laws

The social media site Gab.ai is accusing Google of violating federal antitrust laws when the tech giant booted Gab from the Google Play Store, according to lawsuit filed Thursday. The legal action is the latest salvo in an escalating battle between right-leaning technologists and leaders against Silicon Valley giants such as Facebook and Google.
Gab alleges in the lawsuit that “Google deprives competitors, on a discriminatory basis, of access to the App Store, which an essential facility or resource.”
“Google is the biggest threat to the free flow of information,” Gab chief executive Andrew Torba said in a statement. “Gab started to fight against the big tech companies in the marketplace, and their monopolistic conduct has forced us to bring the fight to the courtroom.”
Google banned the social media platform from the Google Play Store last month, citing violations of Google's hate speech policies. Andrew Anglin, the founder of the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, had become an active user on Gab after a succession of companies refused to service his site. Gab also counts other controversial right-wing figures among its users, including Milo Yiannopoulos and Andrew “weev” Auernheimer.
Gab has raised more than $1 million in contributions since July, according to the complaint.
Gab filed its complaint in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The company said it moved to Pennsylvania this month.

IMO, Apple and Google should not be forced to have to carry the GAB app in their stores however their operating systems shouldn't be able to block the GAB app (without jailbreaking them).
I mean you can install any Windows or MacOS compatible software on your computer, why are you not allowed to install software apps like GAB on your phone?

If they refuse to ban actual white supremacists, they probably deserve to be clipped off. Cute that they included Milo in the story, though.

This really has nothing to do with neo-Nazis. It's just that GAB has a much more liberal free speech policy and they don't ban neo-Nazis or ANTIFA from posting messages through GAB.

I thought that for Android you could get it from GAB and install yourself, it's just that Google Play would not carry it.
Now Apple is different because their code isn't open.

If you Google "Gab" the first link is actually to Gab itself and you also get a bunch of news stories on this lawsuit.
Go figure.

You can install apps on any Android phone from outside of Google's play store there is no "jailbreak" needed. It's a simple check mark in the security settings that says allow installion of apps from outside sources. It takes all of 5 seconds.
There is no Google play store on the billion plus Android devices in China. You can easily install foreign apps or whole app stores on any Android device. I have Amazons app store on a Galaxy S8+.

They can be forced if they are participating in anti-competitive behavior in curating the store. Gab is a competitor to Twitter, who just happens to be pretty chummy with Apple and Google.

Gab did not break any terms of service, Google banned them because of political philosophy and threats to their control of information.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. If I recall correctly Microsoft did not fare so well 20 years ago when they had their own antitrust issues.
My guess is that these tech companies have squeezed too hard in their attempts to appease SjWs and silence opposing viewpoints. It will bite them in the arse in the courtroom. Google is diversified so they will survive, but Twitter will probably not exist in 3 years.
So far Google has been caught:
-manipulating search results
-manipulating auto complete
-manipulating trending news stories
-banning apps from play store
-demonetizing YouTube videos
Not because of any violations of ToS, strictly because of incorrect thoughts.
They are begging to be regulated as a utility.

Next time, try Facebook.

It's about control.
Jack Dorsey, Ruth Porat, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, Eric Schmidt...it's all one big club. None of them will let Jack's echo chamber feel the heat from any legitimate competition. So, the power players have a few options -
- Let the service die out.
- If the service becomes popular, seek a buyout and subsume it into the oligopoly (WhatsApp, Instagram, etc).
- If the service becomes popular, and a buyout isn't feasible, use your media puppets to engage in a campaign to destroy the platform under the pretext of "hate speech" and "bigotry".
This is one of the reasons you will never see viable replacements for Twitter, Facebook, or Youtube. They all protect each other, and have the money and power to control the entire online ecosystem.

Gab is a competitor to Twitter, who just happens to be pretty chummy with Apple and Google.
So I'm not sure Twitter would even worry much about a niche competitor with 0.07% of the users, in a market that is hard to monetize. So why would Google and Apple risk the impact of committing a crime for Twitter?

This is just stupid. Is there more than one app Store that they can put their product in? Of course there is
