Theoretically, were we to ramp up fission energy production and scale it to power nations, the effect on the world’s economy would be huge. Much of the world’s economy turns on energy and cheap, clean energy would turn that on its head.

If this becomes reality, they will have to ration resources. Cars will still need batteries, even if the energy is "almost free".

Questions I have:

1.) What happens to all the countries who's sole source of revenue is O&G? Many of them hate the western world anyway and how will they react when this happens?

2.) The world has limited resources. What happens in the inevitable population explosion when unlimited energy becomes a reality? Will our New World Order impose restrictions on us for the greater good, in order to conserve resources (eat bugs, not beef)?

3.) How do we resolve the battery problems - limited range and limited materials to make them? Or will every car have its own nuclear reactor, which would probably make them cost prohibitive?

I am perhaps a slow witted individual, but when CBS reported this on the evening news they said that this experimental fusion exercise occurred thru the use of lasers to generate the fusion. Pardon me if I am wrong, but does the lasers not require some form of energy input to be able to generate a beam? And the researcher said that if this was true that it could instantly replace all fossil fuels. I am sorry, but the last time I checked my 66 Cobra and 67 Mustang do not run on fusion reactors, but good old dinosaur squeezings. I think the jury is still out.

The reason this was a breakthrough because the fusion released more energy than what they put into it. So the energy used by the lazers was less than what was released.

The guy who said it could instantly replace fossil fuels is naïve and is either saying that for funding or saying it because he's also a political nutjob with an agenda.

What it could do though is power the electric grid, trains, and other things to improve our life.

Vehicles will still need fossil fuels. But not having to use fossil fuels for electricity would still be massive. This type of energy by smooshing two hydrogen atoms together would only have byproducts of energy and helium.

1) they've been preparing it by diversifying their economies. many of those gulf states have been transitioning to a tourism based economic model.

2) unlimited energy means more people elevate out of poverty. i think its proven now that people have less children as quality of life improves (see east asian countries and europe)

Yeah, I would like to see at least a conceptual design of the torsional "donut" to keep the fusion reaction suspended and in place and at the same time the material involved to pull the heat away at the temperature of the sun to boil water.

Yes. They are saying the energy used by lasers to produce the fusion reaction is less than the fusion reaction energy output.

The thing that these small scale theoretical fusion reactions do not have compared to the sun is mass and therefore gravity. Mass and by direct correlation gravity is what keeps the sun's fusion reaction going.
