This woman is 94 years of age and the last surviving daughter of a veteran of such Civil War battles as Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Atlanta.

quote:

Jordan says her family never owned slaves, and lived in a farming community outside of Lake Butler, Florida, where neighbors of all colors depended on each other for their livelihoods.

"If they wanted to borrow equipment they would come over and get it," said Jordan. "And if we needed to borrow equipment we would go over and get it."

quote:

When asked if her stance on remembering the Confederate South paints her as a throwback to the ugly days of American history, Jordan says simply look at her life's work and her family.

Jordan traveled the world with her husband Jim, rescuing orphans from countries such as South Korea, Guatemala, and Ecuador, finding adoptive homes for them in the United States. And her great grandchildren, whom she sees several times a week, have roots in India.

"I'm not a bigot," she said. Her father, who survived the battles of Chickamauga, Atlanta and Missionary Ridge, was a remarkable 82 years old when she was born. His tombstone is marked with C.S.A., which stand for the Confederate States of America.

But Jordan worries that the sacrifices of her family will be written out of the history books.

"In another 50 years they won't even know there ever was a civil war, probably," said Jordan.

A country fighting again, this time over how the Confederacy should be remembered.

That can't be true. We've been told time & time again that all Southerners were racist slaveowners that enjoyed regularly torturing & raping black people.

Believe it or not, but as of a few years ago the grandsons of President John Tyler were still alive. He was born in 1790.

Im sure he was a kind man to her and her family...

but he fought for an enemy country against the USA and deserves no praise or no glory go doing so. He fought for a deplorable CSA who's main tenant was white supremacy.

CSA was trash, their fight was trash and those complicit in it...were trash as well.

Jesus Christ your shite gets old.

You should try reading a few history books and expand your simplistic view of the world, life and history.

We were, and perhaps are, southerners first and Americans second.

Cool story, but one story of someone that wasn't an a-hole doesn't change reality.

Maybe he shouldn't have been a traitor to the United States.

I'd say the ugliness in this thread surprises me, but that'd be a lie.
There's a reason stereotypes exist.
Manners are a lost art on the left.

Maybe we shouldn't have been traitors to Great Britain?

They are all full of hatred. Hatred for men that are dead and gone. They make me sick to my stomach.

I mean...what is the difference between the United States in 1776 and the Confederate States in 1861? There literally is none. I'm pretty sure many Founding Fathers, had they been alive in 1860-61, wouldn't have had a problem with what the South was doing. I know for a certainty that Thomas Jefferson would have approved.

The only thing that sets the two apart was the fact that the Confederates lost in its bid for independence while the United States overcame the odds and won.
