Dude c'mon. To me it looked like that was a pretty sizable sign that took some work/money to put together. It wasn't like some black & white flyers that they were making off with.
That was their property and were obviously trying to get it back. The possibility of the situation escalating is solely up to the discretion of the professor and students stealing the sign. If they had given it back (or wouldn't have taken it in the first place) there is no escalation.

I'm not sure what I just saw. It looked to me like the protesters with the huge sign we're being beligerent to the point of assault. That's no way to voice dissent. Screw those provocateurs! Looked like the teacher had cause to beat the crap out of them, and I don't give a hot damn if they are just imitating the typical liberal protesters. That is some inexcusable personal space invasion. Defensive action is called for.

Either my sarcasm meter is broken or I don't think you know how this all began. Either way, the 2 students holding the big sign were with the teacher. The teacher stole the sign then gave it to the two students and then walked away with those two students following her. The person filming was trying to retrieve the sign stolen by the teacher.
