The defendant in the trial, which was being heard in U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell’s courtroom, is 25-year-old Siale Angilau — an alleged member of the Tongan Crip gang accused of shooting two deputy U.S. marshals in August 2007.

Authorities say a U.S. marshal shot and critically wounded a defendant in a federal courthouse who rushed a witness stand with a pen at his trial in Salt Lake City.

If the defendant was charging a witness with the intent to do the witness harm then I don't really see any problem with the shooting.

I think this just goes back to my belief that violent offenders should be handcuffed in the courtroom. I understand we aren't allowed to do that anymore because it may cause the jury to be prejudiced but I just don't believe an innocent man is going to prison just because they have him in cuffs in the courtroom.

Tongan Crips - one of the most violent groups in America.

Hey man, bad shot. Too bad he is not dead so I can say "One less Crip in the world!".

And BTW, I have seen two murders with pens.

Or the jury, judge and witness stand could be behind protective glass during trials. There'd still be protection and if it was standard in every courtroom, it wouldn't be reflective towards any defendant, as they would be sitting normally with their lawyers.

Cardwell, said he was in the gallery because he was waiting to hear testimony by his mother, Sandra Keyser, who was the victim of a robbery committed by the defendant in 2002, when Angilau was 14 years old.

Cardwell said the marshal fired eight shots and the defendant fell to the floor.

"I thought, when is he going to stop shooting," Cardwell recalled.

The officer then fired a couple more shots at the defendant after he had fallen, Cardwell said.

Whoops.
