I was thinking that, or, "thinking out loud" and it's very common in group settings in engineering when discussing technical issues and there is a cross discipline audience. If you are troubleshooting a process issue on a reactor, a mechanical engineer might ask a question to which the answer is "obvious" to the chemE guys, but,really it's the ME trying to rationalize in his or her mind what the issue is.
We had a facility manager that absolutely believed in the notion of having a smart, non expert person be part of investigations because they would ask smart simple questions. This would cause the experts to prove or disprove through rational thinking.
