EPA's climate change expert rooks taxpayers out of nearly $1,000,000

This guy doesn't believe in half-assed lies, he goes big.
Clearly what this agency needs is another agency to watch out for shenanigins like this.
Forget my agency idea, what we really need is a blue-ribbon panel to investigate this matter and produce a report - a sternly worded one at that.
He needed to get back to Pakistan so he could relieve the other guy who was getting tortured. Kind of like tag-team wrestling.
Like a boss.
Hey, wait a minute...something fishy about this.
When I think of the Federal Government, two words come to mind - competence and efficiency.
Furthermore, I see no reason why we shouldn't entrust our healthcare system to them as they do an exemplary job at all of the other tasks with which they are charged.

The EPA’s highest-paid employee and a leading expert on climate change deserves to go to prison for at least 30 months for lying to his bosses and saying he was a CIA spy working in Pakistan so he could avoid doing his real job, say federal prosecutors.
This guy doesn't believe in half-assed lies, he goes big.

When he first began looking into Beale’s deceptions last February, “I thought, ‘Oh my God, How could this possibly have happened in this agency?” said EPA Assistant Inspector General Patrick Sullivan
Clearly what this agency needs is another agency to watch out for shenanigins like this.
quote:
Two new reports by the EPA inspector general’s office conclude that top officials at the agency “enabled” Beale by failing to verify any of his phony cover stories about CIA work, and failing to check on hundreds of thousands of dollars paid him in undeserved bonuses and travel expenses
Forget my agency idea, what we really need is a blue-ribbon panel to investigate this matter and produce a report - a sternly worded one at that.
quote:
Beale perpetrated his fraud largely by failing to show up at the EPA for months at a time, including one 18-month stretch starting in June 2011 when he did “absolutely no work,” as Kern, Beale’s lawyer, acknowledged in his court filing.
To explain his long absences, Beale told agency officials -- including McCarthy -- that he was engaged in intelligence work for the CIA, either at agency headquarters or in Pakistan. At one point he claimed to be urgently needed in Pakistan because the Taliban was torturing his CIA replacement, according to Sullivan.
He needed to get back to Pakistan so he could relieve the other guy who was getting tortured. Kind of like tag-team wrestling.
quote:
He also claimed to be suffering from malaria that he got while serving in Vietnam. According to his lawyer’s filing, he didn’t have malaria and never served in Vietnam. He told the story to EPA officials so he could get special handicap parking at a garage near EPA headquarters.
Like a boss.
quote:
Top EPA officials, including McCarthy, attended a September 2011 retirement party for Beale and two colleagues aboard a Potomac yacht. Six months later, McCarthy learned he was still on the payroll. In a March 29, 2012 email, she wrote, “I thought he had already retired."

You had me at rooks. I need to put this in my everyday vocabulary

Incredible! The most egregious indictment of federal government incompetence. The highest paid guy goes MIA for months at a time and they don't even replace him.
Oh Wait, maybe we can get Obama to pull one of those 18 month CIA shifts to get him out of the White House for a while.

Wow. This is really hard to believe. Some federal agencies are run so tightly (fiscally) and micromanaged to the smallest degree, that this level of fraud being successfully perpetrated is shocking. The disparity between the way different federal agencies are run is staggering.

I love how groups like the Tea Party need to report all their spending to the government yet the government can't account for this bullshite with our money. Oh, that's right, we are subjects that are to be watched by the elite rulers where they know best for us.

Here's another angle - credibility.
This guy was apparently instrumental in guiding policy as far back as the Clean Air Act and was one of the agency's "go-to guys" on climate change.
Now they must concede that he is a scam artist and pathological liar...
EXCEPT when it came to environmental regulation. He spoke nothing but the gospel truth then.

I would love to know what organizations you are talking about. Very few are careful with our money.
Shocking? Do you live under a rock? Govt waste is very well known

Probably the biggest indictment in this story is the fact that this employee, who was the highest paid, and his job responsibilities were apparently not missed.
Says a lot about the redundancy and waste in the federal government.

I know it goes against conventional wisdom, but some federal agencies are actually quite strict. The Judicial Branch, most notably, minus the occasional extravagance of federal judges, is very tight with money as orgnizations go. I think it probably has to do with not having any control over the budgeting process on the congress.
In my experience, the Bureau of Prisons is a very well run organization that operates on a fraction of the cost per inmate than comparable state corrections agencies.

I would imagine it will always come down to the competency and integrity of the managers and leaders of the agency. Any organization (government entity, private business, non-profit, etc.) requires good leadership to be successful.
The problem is that we don't let federal agencies fail like poorly-run private organizations do. What's worse is that the solution to their problems is the opposite. Instead of letting them fail, we actually give them more money.
I would love to see the books of government entities who are run by individuals with private sector experience vs. those who are run by individuals whose entire life has been in the public sector.

But... wait a sec... I thought "climate scientists" were beyond reproach?
Posted on 12/17/13 at 9:38 am to reverendotis
I remember when this story broke a while back and thinking this could be the "poster boy" story of how government has gotten to big. The highest paid most important employee on climate change goes missing for 18 months and no one even notices or cares.

Even the experts can't agree on the total number of federal government agencies, commissions, and departments.
Most estimates suggest there are probably more than 2,000 of these. They each have an area of specialization — some much broader than others — but their duties often overlap, making administration more difficult. To complicate things even more, many agencies have counterparts at the state and local level. Its size, complexity, and overlapping responsibilities leave the federal bureaucracy open to constant attempts to reorganize and streamline.

Climate Scientist/CIA how are these two remotely associated? Is there some new secret of the govt. being hidden? Is there a group looking the Lost Ark of the Temple?

Seems like a real stand up guy.....like all climate change experts.
Was he falsifying data as well?

I'm sure the dedicated and trustworthy employees in charge of everyone's health care will never stoop this low.

Its the EPA. The most out of control, incompetent and dangerous agency in government.
We had to install a fake smoke stack on the side of one of our plants just to adhere to an EPA directive. We run a closed batch system and emit nothing into the atmosphere. There is no duct work leading to the stack, we pointed that out to the fool and he didn't care, its there and that makes them happy.

I'm wondering if Americans really trust their government at all?
Some distrust is healthy.
