Just look how staged that photo is and we fell for it at the time.

I know some of the people involved and know the back story.

The photo wasn't "staged" per se.

There were a couple of hundred protesters in front of the house. Which is why they used BORTAC (the US Border Patrol SWAT team). The DOJ had been in contact with the family once the order to return Elian to his father was issued by the court. The family basically said "come get him if you dare." Which is why they knew the feds were coming and the photographer was there. When the vans carrying BORTAC came down the street the protesters all gathered in the front yard. So, after some judicious use of tear gas and batons, the tactical unit finally got in the house. By that time the guy and the photographer had fled with Elian to the back bedroom which is where that picture was taken.

So the photo was 100% "staged" by the family but not by the feds. They didn't realize it but they almost caused a shooting. The two agents who went in the bedroom told me that just as they reached the door and turned the corner the photographer started flashing away with the camera. The first thought was that the guy had a gun and was shooting. They told me they were just a hair away from shooting him.

The whole thing was ridiculous.

Anyone who isn’t a diehard anti-Castro is highly suspect. We’re talking about a tyrant ruling in one of the US’s closest neighbors.

To point out more liberal hypocrisy. I love doing that. We should all do it every chance we get.

Every time I see that picture, I have to do a double take to make sure that agent isn’t Detective Sipowicz.

To me, he looks like Principal Rooney from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

The kid's dad was still alive, in Cuba. He had to go back.

No he didn't. There was a USSR prof who got permission to teach college in the US for one year. He brought his son. The Russians kept his wife and younger child hostage to ensure his return.
After the year was over the Prof prepared to leave and the 9 y.o. son said he wanted to stay and asked for asylum.
The son won and is still living in America and dad left without him.

It was basic international law. His mom illegally took him away and when she died he had to be returned to his father. If his mom had lived he'd get to stay in the US and visit his dad in Cuba. That happens all the time. People visit family in Cuba from the US al the time. But he had to go back to his father as a basic tenant of international law.

If you get mad when Iranians or Saudi's kidnap their kids from the US from their American parent to take them there with no intention of having them return to their American parents then you have to support Elian going back to his father.

The kid was like 9 and needed to go back to his father.

Why doesn't that work for all the illegal criminal aliens invading this country?
For them it's the opposite. The kid doesn't go back, the parents come here, and then sometimes, others too.

What happened to "Basic International Law"?
