Something So Wrong


Every presidential election is inevitably followed by a sense of anticipation. Citizens wonder what the new POTUS will seek to accomplish, how they will govern, and what role they will play on the world stage.

There is no denying that this election is different. The citizenry is not living with hopeful anticipation, but with a looming sense of dread. Some are living in fear of losing their rights, of losing their jobs, of losing their healthcare. Some are terrified of being harassed, or even persecuted on the basis of their race, their ethnicity, their sexual orientation.

Even those who supported Trump are now coming to the realization that they, too, have been lied to, played by a self-serving grifter who not only has no intention of fulfilling the promises he made in order to secure their votes, but the late-breaking realization that they may very well wind up in a far worse position than they have been in before now.

We all, each and every one of us, are already facing the fact that this new pResident is a loose cannon whose ignorance, boorish behaviour, and pettiness will cause us unprecedented humiliation in the global community. We already know that the progress made by Obama – progress that benefited ALL Americans – will likely be completely obliterated by a man who is stunningly unprepared to take up the reins of power. We already know that our economy is going to suffer, and our fellow citizens are going to suffer, and our standing in the world will be reduced to ridicule.

There is something very wrong when the only people who are celebrating Trump’s election are those who now feel free to proudly display their racism, their bigotry, their penchant for violence – and yes, above all, their lack of decency.

There is something very wrong when we see swastika’s appearing on our buildings, in our parks, on our playgrounds; when we watch our neighbours cower in fear because they dress in a way that marks them as being of a certain religion or ethnicity.

There is something very wrong when we hear words like “****” and “kike” being used without shame, hear teachers threatening children with horror stories about how they will become orphans when their parents are deported, when we witness violence on our streets perpetrated by lowlifes whose hatred is now unfettered and unchecked.

There is something VERY wrong about all of this – and the fact that it has been encouraged by the man who is about to hold the highest office in our nation, and the most powerful position on the planet, is beyond frightening. The fact that this “new era” of
division, hatred and fear has been ushered-in by the man who is tasked with leading our country is truly beyond disturbing.

There is no point in reiterating Trump’s failings as a businessman, as a politician – indeed as a human being. His lack of interest in the job he is about to take on, and his lack of understanding of the responsibilities of that position, are only surpassed by his lack of interest in the well-being of his country and his fellow citizens. He hasn’t even taken office yet, and he has already proven himself to be a failure at everything a president should be, and needs to be. And with every passing day, with every appointment made, with every statement uttered, he demonstrates his unwillingness to fulfill the duties of office for the betterment of the nation he will soon swear to protect and serve.

Like most of us, I have no solutions, no quick fix to the disaster that is about to unfold – the depths and breadth of which we cannot yet know or assess.

All we have at this point is our faith in each other. Therein lies our only strength in combating what is about to happen, our only weapon on the battlefield that our country is about to become.

And so we must persevere. We must stand up for our countrymen, we must protect the most vulnerable among us, we must spare no effort in fighting for what we believe in. Every onslaught on our rights must be met with resistance, every push must be met with a shove, every action that threatens our fellow Americans must be met with a unified front unwilling to be moved.

We no longer have any choice in the matter. It is now truly us or them. The line in the sand has been drawn – it is up to all of us to ensure that that line is held.

From the movie “Glory”: “If this man should fall, who will lift the flag and carry on?”

The answer MUST be “I will”, and it MUST be shouted by every last one of us.
