Also, didn't the subsidized renters realize this was coming?

The article didn't make that clear. I'm not sure if they knew there was an expiration date on the price of their rent, especially after living their for several years.

The market controls the rent.

Eh, not sure about that. The sheer amount of Section 8 housing drives prices up to where working people can't afford to live in NOLA. Plus there's the exorbitant property taxes, which have to be passed on to the tenant for the landlord to make a profit. Both are government interventions.

If Section 8 had never been invented, landlords would have to lower the rent to reflect local the income levels.

Are you telling me that guy and his girlfriend can't bring in more income than the $700 per month he gets in disability?

Ridiculous. They need this fire lit under their asses.

ETA: Downvoter, tell me why they can't earn more in income?

What makes you think I voted for him? Serious question.

Please link a post where I've supported him or his policies.

Sad to do this around Christmas.

just a matter of timing

it's when the lease is up

they have to give certain notice

if they did this prior to that deadline, they'd have to deal with protests and shite

i agree fully

but

it's still the market. it's just a warped market due to governmental interference making property more expensive for the working class (from top to bottom)

I have friends who live in that building. Super nice and definitely trendy. A 570 square foot apartment costs $1050. It's kinda cruel that this is happening right around the holidays. I'm interested to hear the poli board's thoughts.

My Thoughts are that apparently the developer held up their end of the bargain.

I also doubt they just announced last week

Stealing tax payer money. $29 mm.
That's sad that you actually believe this.

To encourage private investors to put money into a run down eyesore of a property, the owners were allowed to issue tax free bonds to finance the redevelopment of the property.

Those bonds were bought by other investors. The $29 million did not come from taxpayers.

In exchange for the bonds being tax free to the buyers of the bonds, the owners had to commit to provide low income housing in part of the property for 15 years.

Where in that transaction was taxpayer money stolen?

I'm using SFP's logic. If tenants who pay an agreed upon price of rent are stealing, American Can must have been stealing too.

It's also strange.

The article specifically says they took it in return for the 15 year deal and they held up their end. Very odd definition of stealing.

And yeah. They were bonds. Sort of important detail

In any case.

I'm really not sure what the issue here is.

Company built apartments. Provided some of them at lower than market rates as part of bond deal.

Held up their end of the deal. Deal has expired.

Where is the point of contention?

If you don't see it, you don't see it.

Most people can acknowledge that the timing sucks, but not everyone has empathy.

I get that it sucks. But, lots of things in life suck.

Is the problem that it happened around Christmas? Is the hope that they'd extend to say, June? Is the hope that they never stop the lower rates?

I can empathize that it sucks but that's not a point of contention.

OK. It sucks. It is what it is.

I have no sympathy for anything bad that happens to people on the government dole.

They issued tax free bonds. Taxes that could have been paid were not.

In exchange, the taxpayer got to foot the bill for other people's rent. Some of those people are bums.

So the taxpayer had a for profit company issuing bonds that were tax free. The taxpayer then had to pay the subsidy for bum's rent.

The taxpayer got screwed twice. You know another word for tax payer? Bill payer.
