Do you want your children to share your political viewpoint?

Would you be disappointed if your child, as an adult, had political views that were different than yours?

Would you feel that you failed them in your parenting or guidance in their education?

What about a difference in religious views?

My personal feeling is that if my kid (only 5 now) ended up as a carbon copy of me THAT would be a failure on my part. It is my job to raise an open minded child who has the tools to make her own decisions down the road.

Is it impossible to arrive at your political positions with an open mind?

Do you believe your political positions to be superior?

If the answer to both of those questions is 'yes,' why wouldn't you want your children to arrive at those conclusions.

I want my children to be free thinkers capable of arriving at conclusions like 'rape is bad.' It will be a failure of mine if they don't.

I want them to think for themselves and not submit to group think or party politics.

I will only feel like a failure if she lets her emotion control her thoughts and beliefs.

I won't care if I disagree with her as long as she can defend her beliefs rationally

If I raise any of my six to be a lib, then I am a failure as a father.

I never talked politics to my son. He grew up conservative on his own. I can't say how I would have reacted if he grew up a Marxist.

However, my brother had 3 sons. Two grew up conservative and one a Marxist. My brother's position was not to argue with him because 'God has a plan for him.'

At the age of 40 the little commie fell into a very good paying job and discovered what 'high income tax bracket' means. He's now a moderate.

Best to keep them far away from this board then.

If I didn't want my children to have my viewpoint, I'd change my viewpoint.

Would I disinherit them if they didn't agree? = Hell no. But that doesn't mean I didnt' disabuse them of the crao they were being exposed to in school when they were young (primarily, my grandchildren - when my children were in school that problem was not nearly so rampant.)

Your kids are going to be huge libs if you keep on throwing conservative tweets at them every day.

100% agree. I'd want my son to use his brain and not his emotions. There is nothing more annoying than someone making arguments based on emotion.

I am probably closest in my views to a little "l" libertarian. However, I have generally gone GOP nationally.

However, I don't see politics as a zero sum game or bloodsport. Plenty of people vote/believe differently than me and I like to think they came to their viewpoint honestly.

I can disagree with someone on how best to govern without vilifying them.

The Golden Rule is a pretty good way to live.

Are you sure? What if her true self is a drug addicted prostitute with face tattoos and blue hair? "I gotta be me' is overrated. If 'me' is a loser you should try being someone else.

I guess. I'm more concerned with their personal qualities and values than I am with their professed political ideologies, though. I guess I just want them to grow into quality people who value hard work, independence, kindness, personal decency, humor.

Tell you what. I'd rather kids who were 180 from me politically but fundamentally decent than carbon copies who were assholes.

I tell my children that no matter what they believe, to research it and be educated about why they believe what they believe. Don't just go with what's in style or the latest fad.

Interesting topic.

It makes me think of the 80's sitcom Family Ties. The teenage son Alex Keaton turned out to be a staunch Conservative. His parents were 60's Uber Liberals.

It made for an interesting dynamic during the shows run.

I want my children to love America and the historic freedom it allows.
I want my children to believe that hard work pays off.
I want my children to look in the mirror before blaming others for their failures.
I want my children to succeed so they can be in position to PERSONALLY help others that God places in their life.

So, yes, I would be disappointed if my child was a democrat.

I don't share my parents political/religious views in the least. We manage to have a wonderful relationship despite that.
If my kids became christian conservative republicans, i wouldnt agree, but i wouldnt hold it against myself or them, and see no reason why it would be anymore of a factor to divide us than hair or eye color.
