I feel like it would be to our advantage to partner with another global energy power in Eastern Europe to align against the Middle Eastern oil cartel that seems hell bent on funding Islamic terror.

If you want to be adversarial towards Russia, what's your thinking?

I would like to see us in an arms length fair dealings relationship with Russia. If they do shitty stuff, like invade Crimea, we call them out. If they do something good, we acknowledge it. But one of the problems with Russia now is that they are a corrupt state system that throws huge amounts of cash around to buy influence to get people to act against the interests of their own nations. We must act in our own self interest. Russia acts only in its own self interest. Being pals only goes so far with the Russians.

No. They don't contribute shyt to U.S. economy, they're corrupt as hell + attacking our elections. Sanction the hell out of them.

U.S. goods exports to Russia totaled just $11 billion in 2013, equivalent to less than 0.1% of U.S. GDP. U.S. goods imports from Russia totaled $27 billion, just under 0.2% of U.S. GDP.

You just described 99% of Congress. The U.S. Congress is the biggest organized crime operation in the history of the world, and they operate 'legally'.

You're laughable.

U.S. and Russia are the top 2 nuclear powers on the planet..the world would benefit if both, at least, were to have a positive, cordial relationship.

Yes, I have no idea why they would be a threat in today's age. They dont threaten our way of life and FAR more Americans have been killed by our "allies" and muslims than Russia.

I actually really don't like Trump. However, I am mature enough to see the benefits of having a seat at the table in Eastern European affairs. I also think it would be advantageous to have a non-Israeli ally against Wahabbism.

We are already at odds with China, and half of Western Europe wants nothing but free money from us. I feel pretty strongly that within 30 years we will have moved beyond fossil fuels for the main source of US energy, but until then, it would be nice to have a relatively sane ally with similar goals on the global stage.

Russia > Saudi Arabia

Russia > Iran

Russia > Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, and every other tribalistic Middle Eastern theocracy.

If even a quarter of the stuff about what Putin has done is true then he should be no friend of ours.

It has nothing to do with being adversarial for adversarial's sake.

I think that is a weird way to frame it. I don't know anyone that wants conflict for conflicts sake.

Russia operates in a way that is counter to our national and domestic self interest on a number of fronts. They have a vested belief that in order to improve their larger lot in life, it requires a depreciation of ours and a number of our allies. So they seek things like a dismantling of the international order that is largely led by us, that has provided America the backbone of our hegemonic power. They seek a greater level of economic control on the world stage to benefit their government of cronies at everyone else's expense(including their citizenry). Why should America sacrifice that en masse to a country that has aims against our long-term self interest to gain a much smaller level of temporary cooperation in some other area? it makes no sense.

If we share a common ground like on terrorism, by all means, cooperate. But if you are then going to tell me it requires America putting Russia's interests above ours, like some BS that Russia is responsible enough to carry an increased role of power over a number of our allies. That will diminish our power to counter any future and likely aggression, and harm our long-term trustworthiness amongst remaining allies? Allies that are much more economically valuable in the aggregate. Then frick no.

At the expense of being friendly with the EU? Absolutely not. The EU is a 20 tn dollar economy, Russia is 3.7 tn. And Russia's population is declining.
