An important point to remember is that the NRA didn’t send out a message to all its members to start blastin Yeti. The membership effectively did this on their own.

Marion Hammer sent out a message to some people, but not all the members. And she didn’t tell them to go after Yeti.

Post the part of that letter where the NRA told its members to start blasting Yeti on social media or to boycott their products. I’ll wait.

Absolutely right. Yeti trying to act innocent is a joke. They know what is going on right now with the dems, the NRA, etc... anyone at Yeti that claims this was an independent move and not pandering ought to be fired. As a business you have to understand the climate and how your moves are going to be perceived. They might have tried to sneak this through for some reason but it didn't work.

I know that almost as soon as those carpetbaggers of Dicks Sporting goods made their announcement on AR 15s and other similar guns Academy was out front immediately saying "not us... we aren't doing that". Yeti made a decision and it backfired.

A lot of people don't know it but Yeti didn't start off at the big stores. They started by making deals with fishing guides and hunting guide services. The guide we used in Baffin Bay for customers is who we bought our first Yeti from and another 4 or 5 for customers. Most of the bigger guides had them at their lodge for years before Academy ever knew what a Yeti was. This was a grassroots brand build. They forgot who their customer base was.

You know... I don't know many soccer moms that want to tote around a 40+ pound empty cooler. Liberals in big cities don't have a need for coolers that hold ice for 5 days. That isn't their customer base but they seem to have forgotten that. They are in the process of getting a Dixie Chicks type lesson.

I don’t buy $400 coolers to keep my beer cold for 2 weeks.

However, someone at the Yeti marketing/sales team should have had the situational awareness to know “hey guys, let’s postpone this realignment for 12 months with regards to the NRA because it’s going to be misinterpreted right now.”

No one did that, clearly. Yeti should consider what it’s marketing team is actually doing with their time.

People can buy (or not) whatever cooler they want,or not,for whatever reason they choose.
It's all Yeti's problem.

Agreed . They definitely underestimated how stupid their customer base is. But to their credit, their customers pay $400+ for a cooler.

The problem WTH Yeti started when Rtic starting outselling them 3-1 (why the IPO was cancelled). Will probably be 5-1 now.

The only way that Yeti can fix this is to come out with a statement that they support Trump and that they disavow the SJW PC culture of the left. That they despise coastal elites and professors at colleges and globalist in general. That they stand back to back with the NRA in the fight against the left and will KILL anybody who advocates for doing away with the 2nd amendment .

Let's be honest here. Their marketing/PR team is almost certainly NOT populated by incompetents. As such, the idea that no one in the room thought of the potential issue they might run in to is silliness. I'm not arguing that the reaction is correct, simply that the reaction was 100% predictable.

Given that reality, the idea that this realignment occurred with a bunch of Yeti people blissfully unaware doesn't pass the smell test.

What DOES pass the smell test is a bunch of PR people trying to figure out how to cut ties while having a plausible justification.

Regardless, this is a spectacular PR failure that was so avoidable it isn't even funny.

at these comments

Which is more likely?

1. Executives at Yeti decided to piss off their customers by giving a huge middle finger to the NRA

or

2. NRA members overreacted to some fake news

The short answer is Yes.

However, the longer and much more correct answer is that people purchase products they like or don't like. If you manufacture or sell products do yourself a favor and stay out of the politics altogether. When you get into the politics you are going to start alienating some of your customer base. You know... the customer base you spent years or a decade+ building.

When you open yourself up to "virtue" purchases as you put it... something has gone wrong because people are no longer talking about your product. They are now talking about the owners politics. Maybe you don't understand it but at that point you have a big fricking problem as a company.

Give Yeti a call and they might be able to explain it to you.
